Teen's Silent 'Help' Plea Saves Her from Alleged Kidnapper at Petrol Station
A terrified 16-year-old girl was rescued from her alleged kidnapper after she silently mouthed the word 'help' to an alert shop worker at a petrol station in Michigan, United States. The incident, which unfolded on April 13, involved a harrowing abduction from a bus stop and a desperate plea that led to the suspect's swift arrest.
Abduction from Bus Stop
According to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, the teenager was waiting at a bus stop around 7am in Hamtramck when Donald Fields, 48, allegedly placed something on her back and forced her into a van at gunpoint. Another student from the same school witnessed the abduction and immediately called 911 as Fields drove away.
Prosecutors stated that Fields then allegedly sexually assaulted the girl inside the van before stopping at a petrol station. He walked into the store with the girl, where he asked her to buy cigarettes for him, according to police reports.
Quick-Thinking Shop Worker Intervenes
Abdulrahman Abohatem, the shop worker behind the counter, noticed something was amiss. 'When he ask her to pay for the cigarettes, I stop and go there's something wrong. And she mouthed to me, like with no sound, 'help',' Abohatem told local media.
Acting swiftly, Abohatem came out from behind the protective glass, confronted Fields, and brought the girl to safety. 'I go out, I kick him out, I ask the girl go behind me. I feel good when you save somebody. Sixteen years old - she is a child,' he added.
Police Response and Arrest
Meanwhile, the Hamtramck Police Department had launched a search for the teenager after being notified by fellow students who tracked her location to the petrol station. Responding officers rushed to the scene, where bodycam footage shows them arresting Fields as he walked out of the store alone.
Fields asked, 'For what?' as he was detained. Police have released further footage capturing the alleged moment of the abduction from the bus stop.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Fields faces serious charges, including:
- Two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct
- Kidnapping
- One count of felonious assault
- Three counts of felony firearm
- One count of being a felon in possession of a firearm
Hamtramck Mayor Adam Alharbi noted on Thursday that Fields has a criminal history of sexual assault charges, leading to the additional firearm charge. Fields entered a not guilty plea during his arraignment and is being held without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 30.
Praise for the Survivor
Prosecutor Kym Worthy praised the teenager's resilience, stating, 'Our young survivor in this case was simply walking in broad daylight when she was viciously attacked and sexually assaulted. Despite what she had just gone through, her quick thinking and mental toughness saved her life. We cannot reverse what happened to her, but we can work hard to bring justice to her.'
The case highlights the critical role of community vigilance and swift police action in preventing further harm, with the shop worker's intervention being hailed as a key factor in the successful rescue.
