Tributes Flow for Police Sergeant and Mother-of-Two After Sudden Death
Tributes for Police Sergeant and Mother After Sudden Death

Tributes are flooding in for a dedicated police sergeant and loving mother-of-two following her unexpected death. Coleen Mellor was discovered deceased in her residence, with authorities indicating she likely took her own life.

Devastating Discovery by Ex-Husband

Her former spouse, Craig Mellor, made the heartbreaking find when he visited Coleen's home to collect her dog on January 15. Coleen and Craig had been together for twelve years before separating in 2025, and they share two teenage sons, Noah and Charlie.

Despite their divorce, the pair maintained a close friendship and co-parented their children, who are now grappling with the 'unimaginable grief' of losing their mother.

Aspiring Detective Inspector

Coleen had advanced to the rank of police sergeant and harbored ambitions of becoming a detective inspector. Her long-time friend Elisia Sharpe described her as a 'wonderful and kind' mother, highlighting her supportive nature.

Family and friends have been left stunned by her death and have established a GoFundMe page to assist her boys during this difficult period.

Family's Shock and Grief

Craig, aged 42, recounted the moment he found Coleen, expressing his disbelief. 'I walked in and I found her. It was a shock, especially when you don't expect it. There were no signs,' he said.

He added that they had spoken the night before, and everything seemed normal, with Christmas celebrations having been perfect. Craig emphasized their close bond, noting they always communicated about any issues.

'I just think what is big enough or scary enough that makes you feel that this is the only way out,' he reflected.

Funeral Plans Delayed

The family has yet to arrange a funeral, as Noah is currently sitting his GCSE exams. Craig, who works as a paint sprayer, is adjusting to raising his children as a single parent.

'My eldest has exams and the other son has a birthday next week, so we don't have a date for the funeral yet. The boys live with me,' he explained.

He expressed concerns about being the sole parent, noting the challenges of having only one person for the children to turn to.

Friend's Heartfelt Tribute

Elisia Sharpe first met Coleen in 2010 when their children were born on the same day in the same hospital. They quickly became 'inseparable' friends and served as godmothers for each other's second children.

Elisia described the loss as a 'horrendous shock' to her family, stating, 'I feel like time stopped that day, all of the days are a blur. It is such a loss, feels like living a nightmare.'

She initiated the fundraiser to support Craig and the children through this 'incredibly difficult' time, recalling how Coleen had been a rock for her during her own separation.

Police Federation's Statement

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Police Federation expressed devastation over the off-duty death of Sergeant Coleen Mellor. 'Our thoughts are with her family, friends and close colleagues at this time,' they said.

Coleen was remembered as a popular colleague on the Wakefield and Leeds district teams, with the federation urging officers and staff struggling with mental health to seek support.
