Attempted Intervention Thwarted by Intense Flames
Lamin Kongira, a 42-year-old chef with 15 years of residency in Glasgow, was walking along Union Street on Sunday afternoon when he observed smoke emanating from a vape shop. Witnessing an individual fleeing the premises, Mr Kongira entered the establishment to investigate the source of the smoke. Inside, he discovered a fire originating from behind the counter, potentially linked to an electrical socket box.
Finding no fire extinguisher available within the vape shop, Mr Kongira promptly exited to procure one from a neighbouring Subway outlet. Upon his return, he endeavoured to combat the flames, but the intensity of the fire proved overwhelming. He described hearing loud bangs and was forced to retreat outside as the situation escalated dangerously.
Multiple Explosions and Rapid Escalation
Mr Kongira recounted to the Press Association that after the initial firefighting efforts failed, an explosion occurred, likely from a vape product, signalling that the blaze was beyond his control. He then focused on ushering people away from the scene, as captured in social media footage showing a substantial column of smoke billowing from the shop.
Subsequently, a more powerful secondary explosion erupted before the arrival of the fire brigade. Over the following hours, the flames spread aggressively throughout the structure, causing significant portions of the building to collapse. Mr Kongira emphasised the personal significance of Central Station, describing it as "monumental" to his life in Glasgow and a key factor in his decision to act.

The chef reported suffering from headaches due to smoke inhalation, managing his symptoms with water and paracetamol post-incident.
