A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the grim discovery of a body inside a burning garage in Worcester, with police now linking the incident to a second fire that erupted at a community centre shortly afterwards.
Discovery of the Body
Police officers made the shocking find after a garage was deliberately set ablaze on Surman Street in Worcester at approximately 6am on Thursday morning. The body was located within the charred remains of the structure, prompting an immediate murder investigation by West Mercia Police.
Second Fire Incident
Around an hour later, at roughly 7am, emergency services were called to another fire, this time at the Unity House Community Hub on Stanley Road, situated approximately one and a half miles away from the initial scene. Detectives have confirmed they believe there is a connection between the two blazes and the discovery of the deceased individual.
Police Investigation Underway
Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Lougher of West Mercia Police stated, "We have immediately launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a body in a garage in Worcester. At present we do not know the identity of the man who has sadly lost his life, but we are working hard to establish his formal identification."
He added, "A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and he remains in custody. The community can expect to see an increase in officers in the area as we conduct extensive enquiries into the death of the man."
Scene Examination
Crime scene investigators, including personnel wearing hazmat suits, were deployed to the Surman Street location. The area surrounding the garages was cordoned off with police tape by the fire service as forensic work commenced.
A local resident living near the community centre reported observing smoke emanating from the rear of the building. The anonymous resident remarked, "All I know is there was some smoke from round the back and then the fire brigade turned up. All I could see was white smoke. It's usually quite quiet around here."
