Eton College Headmaster Issues Statement After Former Teacher Imprisoned for Sexual Assault

The headmaster of Eton College has issued unreserved apologies on behalf of the prestigious institution following the imprisonment of a former teacher convicted of sexually assaulting a pupil. Jacob Leland, who taught Russian at the elite boarding school where annual fees exceed £60,000, was sentenced to three years and three months in prison on Friday after being found guilty of three counts of sexual assault on a male student.

Headmaster Expresses Appalled Reaction to Abuse

Simon Henderson, the current headmaster at Eton College, expressed his profound dismay in a formal statement, declaring himself "appalled" by Leland's criminal conduct. "Eton needs to acknowledge not only that something this serious was able to take place at our school, but also that it took several years for the details of what happened to come to light," Mr Henderson stated.

He continued: "As headmaster, I remain appalled that this abuse happened at Eton. Mr Leland's criminal conduct represents the most egregious breach of trust. Those who were directly impacted by Mr Leland's actions had the right to be safe and secure in our care." The headmaster reiterated his unreserved apologies to the victims on behalf of the school.

Court Reveals Disturbing Details of Assaults

During proceedings at Reading Crown Court, disturbing details emerged about the assaults that occurred in 2012 when Leland was 23 years old. The court heard that Leland had been trusted by a housemaster to supervise students and adhere to school regulations, a position he grossly abused.

The first assault occurred after Leland invited the pupil and his friends to his teachers' accommodation flat, where he provided them with alcohol and cigarettes. After asking the complainant's friends to leave, Leland kissed the boy before taking his hands and placing them on his own groin.

Shortly after this initial incident, Leland committed a third sexual assault by performing oral sex on the complainant during a school trip, further violating the trust placed in him as an educator.

Judge Highlights Lasting Psychological Impact

Sentencing Leland, Judge Kirsty Real emphasised the significant responsibility inherent in the teacher-student relationship and the profound betrayal of trust. "The relationship of teacher and student at a school gives rise, undoubtedly, to a significant level of responsibility towards the victim upon which the victim would be entitled to rely," Judge Real stated.

She added: "For the victim, the psychological effects of what you did to him have been long-lasting and serious." Leland, from Gatcombe Road in Islington, London, was found guilty of the offences on 14 October last year following a thorough legal process.

Eton's Safeguarding Commitments and Processes

In his comprehensive statement, Mr Henderson affirmed Eton College's commitment to pupil welfare as its top priority. "The welfare and wellbeing of our pupils is Eton's top priority. When safeguarding issues arise they are dealt with in accordance with our established processes," he stated.

The headmaster emphasised the school's collaborative approach with external authorities, noting: "We work in close partnership with external authorities, referring matters to them where appropriate, as we did in this case." This case has highlighted the critical importance of robust safeguarding measures within educational institutions, particularly those with boarding facilities.

The conviction and sentencing represent a significant moment for one of Britain's most prestigious educational establishments, prompting serious reflection on safeguarding protocols and the mechanisms for reporting and addressing abuse within elite boarding school environments.
