A recent survey has highlighted a growing concern among educators as more children begin reception without essential basic skills, including toilet training. The study, conducted by Kindred Squared, indicates that 37 per cent of children starting reception in 2025 are not considered "school ready," marking an increase from 33 per cent in 2024.

The research identifies several critical areas where children are struggling. Notably, 26 per cent of reception starters are not toilet trained, while 28 per cent are unable to eat and drink independently. Additionally, 28 per cent face difficulties in using books correctly, which impacts their early literacy development.
Impact on Teaching Time
Teachers report losing approximately 2.4 hours of teaching time each day due to pupils lacking these fundamental skills. Of this time, 1.4 hours are specifically dedicated to toilet-related assistance, diverting resources from educational activities and placing additional strain on school staff.
Causes of the Crisis
Kindred Squared attributes this "systemic crisis" to a combination of factors. Stretched school resources, rising living costs, and parents lacking access to early development information are cited as primary contributors. Furthermore, staff members point to excessive screen time as a factor that may hinder children's acquisition of basic life skills.
Government Targets and Calls for Action
Despite government targets aiming for 75 per cent school readiness by 2028, school leaders are urging for enhanced support in the early years sector. They advocate for early identification of special educational needs and continued investment in community services to address these challenges effectively.
