Anna Friel and Daughter Plan Joint 50th and 21st Birthday Bash

In an exclusive revelation, acclaimed actress Anna Friel has shared intimate details about her upcoming milestone celebrations, planning a joint birthday extravaganza with her daughter Gracie. The Marcella star, who turns 50 in July, will combine festivities with Gracie's 21st birthday, creating a unique family event that highlights their close bond.

Milestone Celebrations and Family Bonds

Anna Friel confirmed the joint party plans during a recent appearance at the RTS TV Awards, where she expressed excitement about marking these significant life events together. "I’m going to have a joint birthday party with my daughter, who’s turning 21 a few days before, so we’re going to have a joint 50th and 21st!", she enthusiastically told the Mirror. This celebration underscores Friel's positive attitude towards ageing, as she has previously stated that 'you're only as old as you feel'.

Award-Winning Role in Gritty Drama

At the glitzy awards ceremony, Friel was nominated for her supporting role in the BBC drama Unforgivable, penned by renowned playwright Jimmy McGovern. The 90-minute episode, which deals with intense family fallout after a brother is released from prison for abusing his nephew, earned Friel the award for best supporting actress. Her co-star Bobby Schofield also won for best male leading actor.

Reflecting on the drama, Friel noted, "It’s really moving. It’s Jimmy McGovern, who’s still one of my very favourite writers. It’s actually the third time I’ve worked with him. I think a lot of people found it a very tough watch as it makes you look at it through so many different angles and perspectives and there’s understanding from both sides of it." She added that her recent roles often explore motherhood's challenges, stating, "I think it’s always showing sides and demonstrating the difficult side of motherhood and the challenges. You know, that’s what our jobs are - to live those journeys and to shine a light on very difficult topics."

Gracie's Musical Journey and University Life

Gracie, Friel's only child with ex-partner David Thewlis, has not followed her parents into acting but is carving out a path as a budding singer-songwriter. Now 20 years old, she has showcased her musical talents through live performances and original songs on social media, while also balancing her university dissertation. Friel proudly shared, "Well, I’m here tonight and she’s elsewhere, as she's got a gig. She’s got a really big audience, she’s a great singer-songwriter and she’s been doing it all by herself, at the same time as doing her dissertation because… I’ve got a daughter finishing university in May!"

Friel recalled recognizing Gracie's talent early on, saying, "I realised it since she started played guitar for two hours every day, from the age of seven. So, instead of watching TV or anything, she was upstairs in her room, constantly playing and singing. Her father and I at the time were like… yeah, she’s got quite a musical gene - and she’s also a wonderful actress. But look, I’ll let her tell her own story, in regards to that. I'm just... a proud mummy!"

Personal Challenges and Pride

The Rochdale-born actress opened up about the difficulties she faced before welcoming Gracie in 2005, including a diagnosis of endometriosis and emergency surgery for a ruptured ovarian cyst. Despite these challenges, Friel expresses immense pride in her daughter's accomplishments and independence. As she prepares for their joint birthday bash, Friel's story highlights a blend of professional success, personal resilience, and the joys of motherhood, making this a heartwarming tale of family and celebration.
