Bev Callard Blasts Coronation Street's 'Crazy' Decision to Kill Off Jim McDonald

Soap legend Bev Callard, currently braving the jungle on I'm A Celebrity All Stars, has launched a surprise rant against Coronation Street bosses over a controversial plot decision. The actress, renowned for her role as feisty barmaid Liz McDonald from 1989 to 2020, expressed bewilderment and frustration at the show's choice to kill off her on-screen husband, Jim McDonald, played by actor Charles Lawson.

Callard's Outburst from the Jungle

In an unexpected outburst, the 69-year-old star labelled the decision as "crazy" during her time in the I'm A Celebrity camp, where she is embroiled in a feud with fighter David Haye. Callard, who now stars in the Dublin-based soap Fair City, praised Northern Irish actor Charles Lawson, 66, describing him as one of the best male actors she has ever worked with and a wonderful human being.

She highlighted their close bond, noting that Lawson plans to visit her in Dublin soon. "We worked together all that time — best mates. In my opinion, Charlie is one of the best male actors I have ever worked with, and also a wonderful human being," Callard said. "What you see is what you get. He doesn't suffer fools, he's brutally honest, but he's wonderful."

Lawson's Character Axed After Decades

Charles Lawson has been a mainstay on the ITV soap since his debut in 1989, with his character Jim McDonald exiting in 2000 and returning for several stints between 2003 and 2018. His departure was revealed earlier this year in a heartbreaking scene where Steve McDonald, Jim's son, received news of his father's death just as he was about to receive a surprise proposal from Cassie Plummer.

Callard expressed regret over the move, stating, "And I think they're crazy for killing Jim McDonald off. I don't know whether Charlie would want to go back or not, but I think it's a shame that opportunity will no longer exist." She emphasised that Lawson's talent and the character's legacy made the decision particularly disappointing.

Lawson's Response and Political Undertones

Last month, Charles Lawson broke his silence on Jim McDonald's death in a social media video, hinting at political reasons behind the axe. He said, "There are many reasons, political ones and all the rest that I shall answer in the next coming of time." Lawson, who has recently opened a cafe and appeared on right-wing news channels, ended his message with a toast to fans, captioning it, "Farewell to the only real man on The Street!"

This move marks the end of nearly 40 years for the character on the cobbles, sparking debate among fans and cast members alike. Callard's criticism adds to the ongoing discussion about creative decisions in long-running soaps and their impact on beloved characters.
