Daniel Radcliffe has offered his reaction to a recent Saturday Night Live sketch that parodied the Harry Potter universe with a romantic twist. The actor, now 36 years old, discussed the spoof in a new interview with Rolling Stone, reflecting on the humorous take that aired last month.
SNL's 'Heated Wizardry' Sketch
The Saturday Night Live segment, titled 'Heated Wizardry', featured Finn Wolfhard portraying Harry Potter and Ben Marshall as Ron Weasley. This sketch creatively reimagined the iconic characters in a storyline inspired by the hockey romance novel 'Heated Rivalry', which follows two Major League Hockey stars who develop a secret, passionate relationship.
Radcliffe's Personal Connection
Interestingly, Daniel Radcliffe revealed he had met Finn Wolfhard just weeks before the sketch aired. 'Weirdly, I had met Finn Wolfhard a few weeks before, randomly, and we chatted for a bit,' Radcliffe told Rolling Stone. 'And then he texted me the day before it aired, being like, 'Hey, just so you know, we're doing a Harry Potter sketch.''
While Radcliffe admitted he hasn't seen 'Heated Rivalry', he acknowledged his girlfriend is a huge fan of the novel. Despite potentially missing some specific jokes, he found the sketch 'very funny and sweet' and expressed enthusiasm for seeing alternative versions of the Harry Potter characters.
The Sketch's Content
In the SNL parody, Ron and Harry find themselves embroiled in a Quidditch rivalry that evolves into a secret romance, mirroring the plot structure of 'Heated Rivalry'. The sketch opened with a voiceover announcing: 'Coming soon to HBO, the beloved wizarding world of Harry Potter makes its television debut... With an all new story hastily written after the success of a certain other HBO show...'
Reunion with Tom Felton
This SNL reaction comes shortly after Radcliffe's December reunion with former Harry Potter co-star Tom Felton in New York. The two actors, who portrayed Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy respectively throughout all eight films of the franchise, appeared together at a screening of Radcliffe's new movie 'Merrily We Go Along'.
Diverging Views on JK Rowling
Despite their warm reunion, Radcliffe and Felton have publicly expressed contrasting positions regarding Harry Potter creator JK Rowling's controversial statements about transgender issues. In 2020, Radcliffe joined several other Harry Potter stars in criticizing Rowling's views, releasing a statement through The Trevor Project affirming that 'transgender women are women' and that contrary statements 'erase the identity and dignity of transgender people.'
Radcliffe also apologized to fans whose experience with the Harry Potter books was negatively impacted by Rowling's comments, expressing his desire to help those affected. In response, Rowling suggested on social media that Radcliffe and co-star Emma Watson were 'celebrities who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women's hard-won rights.'
Felton, meanwhile, has maintained a more guarded stance, expressing gratitude toward Rowling for creating the Harry Potter universe while avoiding direct commentary on the controversy. 'I'm not really that attuned...' Felton said earlier this year when asked if Rowling's views affected his decision to continue participating in Potter-related projects.
Radcliffe's Reflections
Radcliffe revealed he has had no direct contact with Rowling since the controversy began, expressing sadness about the situation. 'It makes me really sad, ultimately,' he said, 'because I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic.'
Despite their differing perspectives on Rowling's statements, Radcliffe and Felton appeared to enjoy their reunion in New York, demonstrating that personal relationships can transcend public disagreements on sensitive social issues.
