Shannen Doherty's Estate Reaches Settlement with Ex-Husband Kurt Iswarienko
Kurt Iswarienko, the ex-husband of late actress Shannen Doherty, has formally reached a settlement agreement with her estate, bringing closure to a contentious posthumous divorce dispute. The Beverly Hills, 90210 star, who passed away on July 13, 2024, at age 53 after a nearly decade-long battle with cancer, continues to be fondly remembered by colleagues and fans alike.
Legal Resolution of Divorce Terms
According to court documents filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court and obtained by PEOPLE magazine, Iswarienko, 51, has agreed to several key provisions to resolve outstanding issues from his divorce with Doherty. The late actress had filed for divorce in 2023 after 11 years of marriage, signing the settlement just one day before her death in July 2024. However, her estate had been engaged in legal battles with Iswarienko, alleging he failed to comply with the terms of their divorce agreement.
The settlement includes the following specific terms:
- Iswarienko will pay the estate "one-half the equity" from their shared property in Dripping Springs, Texas.
- He must return Doherty's coffee table and couch to her estate.
- He is required to "produce an inventory of his photographic works" that feature the late actress.
- He will pay $25,000 to the estate for Doherty's share in a Mooney M-20 airplane.
In return, Doherty's estate has agreed to return Iswarienko's guitars, equipment, and Garard stereo record player, demonstrating a mutual exchange of personal property.
Background of the Dispute
Doherty's legal team and Christopher Cortazzo, trustee of the Shannen Doherty Family Trust, had previously alleged that Iswarienko failed to meet several "monetary obligations" from the divorce settlement. According to the original agreement obtained by PEOPLE, Iswarienko was required to sell their $1.5 million Texas home and "equally divide the net proceeds" with her estate. However, it was alleged he "refused to list" the property, where he appears to be currently residing.
Additionally, Iswarienko had reportedly failed to return Doherty's personal items and produce the inventory of photographs as stipulated. His lawyer countered these claims by arguing that the signed divorce agreement was filed in the wrong court and challenged the jurisdiction of the case, contending that the court had no authority to enforce terms after Doherty's death.
Doherty's Personal and Professional Legacy
Shannen Doherty filed for divorce from Iswarienko in 2023 while battling stage four breast cancer, with her publicist Leslie Sloane stating, "Divorce is the last thing Shannen wanted. Unfortunately, she felt she was left with no other option." Doherty passed away in 2024, four years after her stage four cancer diagnosis, having been first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and achieving remission in 2017.
Upon her death, she was surrounded by loved ones and her beloved dog, Bowie. Sloane confirmed to People magazine, "It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease."
Doherty is best remembered for her iconic roles as Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210 and as Prue Halliwell in Charmed. Before marrying Iswarienko, she had brief marriages to Rick Salomon from 2002 to 2003 and Ashley Hamilton from 1993 to 1994. Her co-stars and the entertainment community continue to honor her memory, reflecting on her significant contributions to television and her courageous fight against cancer.
