Blue's Duncan James Reveals Estranged Father Didn't Recognise Him in Band Photo
Duncan James: Estranged Father Didn't Know Which Blue Member He Was

Blue star Duncan James has opened up about a deeply personal and emotional chapter of his life, revealing that his estranged biological father had no idea which member of the famous boyband he was when shown a photograph. The 47-year-old singer, who was raised solely by his mother Fiona after his parents separated before his birth, never had the opportunity to meet his father during his childhood.

A Lifelong Search for Connection

Duncan embarked on a quest to find his father after achieving significant success with Blue in the early 2000s. At the age of 25, he managed to make contact and had a single telephone conversation with the man. During that call, Duncan informed him that he was a member of the popular musical group.

"I got in contact when I was 25 and had one conversation on the phone, and told him I was in Blue," Duncan recalled. "He had this deep, well-spoken voice, and said: 'Which one are you?'"

The singer was taken aback by the question, internally noting the obvious differences between himself and his bandmates. "I thought: 'I'm not the black guy. I'm not the Greek-looking one. Can't you tell?'" he reflected.

A Meeting That Never Materialised

His father responded by suggesting he could "arrange to meet you for a drink," a phrase Duncan found curiously formal. While he expressed a desire to sit down, share a beer, and learn about his father's life without judgment, the proposed meeting never came to fruition due to subsequent events.

Approximately a week after their phone call, a national newspaper published a double-page spread featuring a man claiming to be Duncan James's father. The article included the first photograph Duncan had ever seen of him, showing him with a guitar, and an interview in which the man asserted that his pop star son had inherited all his musical talent from him.

This publication deeply upset Duncan's mother and led the singer to make the difficult decision not to pursue a meeting with his father after all.

Decades of Unresolved Emotion

A full decade later, Duncan made contact with his father's former partner, with whom he had two children. Duncan noted that his father had left this family in "the same way" he had left his own.

Tragically, his father was later found deceased in his home in Portugal, reportedly "surrounded by bottles." Upon hearing the news of his passing, Duncan was overwhelmed with emotion and burst into tears, a reaction that confused him given he had never met the man.

"I didn't understand why I was crying over a man I'd never met," he admitted, confessing that he still grapples with "daddy issues" to this day.

New Beginnings in Personal Life

Elsewhere in the candid interview, Duncan touched upon his current personal circumstances. He revealed that he has "met someone" new whom he is very excited about, but is cautious about moving too quickly and potentially "jinxing" the promising connection.

This development follows his split from boyfriend Rodrigo Reis in August, after six years together. A source close to the singer confirmed the separation at the time, stating, "Duncan and Rodrigo have gone their separate ways after six years. A break-up is never easy but Duncan has been throwing himself into the band and keeping his mind occupied with music."

It is understood the relationship ended several months prior. Duncan had previously spoken fondly of Rodrigo, who lives in Belgium, noting that he and his daughter "really get on." The pair met in November 2018, but their romantic journey officially began in April 2019.

Following the breakup, Duncan deleted all photographs of them together from his Instagram account, and the two unfollowed each other on the social media platform, marking a clear end to that chapter of his life as he looks toward the future.
