A pivotal moment came following shoulder surgery several years ago, which prompted serious reflection about her wellbeing. Fern decided to take decisive action, resolving to quit smoking, reduce alcohol consumption, regain control of her eating habits, and overcome periods of inactivity and low mood.
Another profound motivation emerged from a near-fatal experience in 2016, when she developed life-threatening sepsis after a hysterectomy. This brush with mortality strengthened her determination to rebuild her physical strength, telling Hello magazine about her renewed capability.
"My legs and arms are much stronger; my tummy is much stronger after four children and everything else my body's been through," she revealed. "I was really close to dying, and yet you can still get up and go out and run and be strong again."
Comprehensive Fitness Regime
Fern embarked on the NHS's Couch to 5K programme, using the official app to gradually build her running stamina. She regularly updated followers on her progress, sharing an excited Instagram post last September about achieving a 6.5 kilometre run.
"I just did 40 minutes of actual running, with a five-minute warm-up walk, and then a five-minute cool-down walk at the end," she explained. "So, 50 minutes all together but 40 minutes running. I covered 6.5K, I can't believe it – it's a bit good!"
Her fitness routine extends beyond running to include dedicated strength training with weights at her home gym, where she has shared impressive selfies demonstrating her toned physique. Cycling has become another passion, culminating in an October cycling holiday through Italy with friends.
Dietary Changes and Sustainable Habits
Alongside her diverse exercise regimen, Fern has implemented significant dietary modifications, notably reducing her sugar intake by approximately eighty percent. She explained to Woman&Home that she began consciously considering her nutritional choices for the first time.
"I started to think about what I was eating, which I had never done before," she admitted. Maintaining "three sensible meals a day" became crucial, particularly when undertaking demanding activities like cycling holidays that require proper fuel for energy and recovery.
