Jamie Redknapp's Personal Transformation
The LA vacation comes as Jamie Redknapp, 52, recently revealed he has maintained sobriety for two years following what he described as a "terrible" hangover after his 50th birthday celebration. The former Liverpool star shared his journey on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, explaining that his decision stemmed from being unable to remember his own birthday festivities.
"I haven't had a drink now in 18 months," Jamie disclosed during the interview. "Purely, I just felt, never had a bad relationship with alcohol, I've always suffered terrible hangovers, so that tells you alcohol doesn't agree with me."
The Turning Point
Jamie described the pivotal moment when he decided to change his relationship with alcohol. "I had my 50th birthday, hammered off my nut, and that was my birthday and I had all my mates there," he recalled. "By the time I got to the club I was in a mess and it really hit me, and the next day I woke up horrendous."
The football pundit emphasized that the feeling of not remembering his celebration proved decisive. "That feeling of not memorizing anything that happened was just horrendous for me," he explained. "So I thought I'm going to stop, I love a glass of wine, and I'm not a drinker, maybe had the odd binge, but I thought I'm going to see how it goes."
Family Motivation and Health Benefits
Jamie's decision to embrace sobriety was significantly influenced by his desire to be more present for his youngest son Raphael, born in 2021 when Jamie was 49. The former athlete also shares two older sons, Charley (21) and Beau (17), with ex-wife Louise Redknapp, from whom he separated in 2017.
"I want to wake up every morning when I see Rafa I don't want to feel like 'oh I feel rubbish today'," Jamie expressed. "I want to get up earlier than him and be as healthy as possible."
While acknowledging that several friends have struggled with substance issues, Jamie clarified that his relationship with alcohol differed. "I didn't have that relationship, but I felt I wanted to stop," he stated. "And that went to one month, two months, six months. And I don't necessarily feel that much better for it, but I just feel pleased that I've done it."
The interview originally aired in October but gained renewed attention when a fan shared a clip on social media platform X, reflecting on their own sobriety journey alongside Jamie's experience.
