Kelly Osbourne Condemns Online Body-Shaming After Brit Awards Tribute
Kelly Osbourne has publicly denounced the "cruel" online trolls who targeted her appearance during a deeply personal moment. The 41-year-old daughter of the late rock legend Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne attended the Brit Awards in Manchester on Saturday evening to accept a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award for her father, who passed away in July.
A Night of Honour Marred by Negativity
While the evening was intended to celebrate Ozzy Osbourne's monumental legacy, Kelly found herself subjected to a barrage of negative comments about her body on social media. In response, she shared a powerful statement from Mia Tyler, the 47-year-old daughter of Aerosmith star Steve Tyler, who expressed unwavering support. Mia's post, captioned "How hard is it to not be a d**k?", included a lengthy message condemning the public dissection of someone's appearance during a time of grief.
The statement read: "Public grief is not public property. Grief can change a person. That doesn't make their body a topic for debate... Before you comment on someone's body, consider the possibility that they're carrying something heavier than your opinion... It takes real strength to stand in the public eye accepting accolades for their late iconic father and hold themselves together in front of the world... The least we can do is show the same grace in return. Kindness costs nothing. Cruelty costs character."
Kelly's Emotional Response to Online Abuse
Following the event, Kelly Osbourne spoke out against the "special kind of cruelty" displayed by her detractors. She stated: "Kicking me while I'm down, doubting my pain, spreading my struggles as gossip, and turning your back when I need support and love most... None of it proves strength, it only reveals a profound absence of character. I'm currently going through the hardest time of my life. I should not even have to defend myself. But I won't sit here and allow myself to be dehumanised in such a way."
On stage at the Co-op Live Arena, Kelly joined her mother Sharon, 73, to accept the bittersweet award. Both dressed elegantly in black for the occasion, with Kelly wearing a glamorous black dress paired with a matching feathered jacket, and Sharon opting for a sophisticated three-piece suit.
Ongoing Concerns and Previous Backlash
This incident is not the first time Kelly Osbourne has faced body-shaming criticism. In recent months, her attendance at various public events, including a front-row appearance at London Fashion Week, has sparked genuine concern for her health and wellbeing. The singer and TV personality, who has denied using weight loss jabs, appeared notably slimmer at the Ascot Millinery Collective's catwalk presentation at Claridge's in Mayfair.
Prior to the Brit Awards, Kelly had already hit back at trolls who criticised her recent weight loss. She took to Instagram to share a screenshot of one particularly distasteful message, which read: "Looks like a dead body... she's too thin and fragile... looks like she's going to see her dad soon," followed by laughing emojis. In response, the mother of one wrote: "Literally can't believe how disgusting some human beings are! No one deserves this sort of abuse!"
The support from Mia Tyler and others highlights a growing call for kindness and empathy in online spaces, especially during times of personal grief. Kelly Osbourne's courageous stance serves as a reminder of the human cost behind public scrutiny and the importance of honouring courage over appearance.
