Most romantic relationships have a defining origin story—whether it's love at first sight or a grand, mutual declaration of feelings. For daytime television icon Lorraine Kelly, however, Cupid's arrow struck during a tipsy evening in the Scottish Highlands.
A Ninja-Style Romance in Glencoe
The Glasgow-born presenter, 66, has openly admitted that she pounced on her now-retired cameraman husband, Steve Smith, "like a ninja" while filming in Glencoe. Lorraine, who has hosted her eponymous ITV morning show since 2010, shared the amusing tale of their courtship.
"I had my eye on Steve since we started working together at TV-am in the 1980s, but was getting nowhere with him," she confessed. "After filming in Glencoe with the mountain rescue team, I got him terribly drunk one night and leapt on him like a ninja. He had no defence, poor soul."
Celebrating Decades of Marriage
This unconventional beginning led to a lasting union, with the couple set to mark their 35th wedding anniversary next year. They tied the knot in 1992 and have a 31-year-old daughter, Rosie, who recently welcomed her own child, Billie.
To commemorate the milestone, Lorraine has ambitious travel plans. "It's our 35th anniversary next year and to celebrate I want to go to Mongolia or spend time in the Falklands—it's like Scotland, but with penguins," she said. "For our silver anniversary we went to Antarctica, which was incredible."
She added, "I can't wait to take my granddaughter, Billie, to Antarctica to see the penguins. Seeing the world through a child's eyes is pure magic."
Studio Relocation and Dressing Room Drama
Meanwhile, behind the scenes at ITV, a series of cost-cutting measures have reshaped the working environment for Lorraine and her colleagues. Shows including Lorraine, This Morning, and Loose Women have all been moved to a smaller studio in central London.
This relocation has forced presenters such as Cat Deeley, Ben Shephard, and Kaye Adams to share dressing rooms and use communal toilets. However, an insider has revealed that Lorraine Kelly is the sole star to retain her own personal toilet within her dressing room.
The 'Private Throne' Controversy
The insider told The Sun, "There have been quite a lot of issues since the team's relocation to the new smaller studios. As well as the cramped space, presenters have had to give up their personal dressing rooms and loos. Lorraine is the only one who has her own private throne."
Even this privilege comes with a caveat, as the insider noted, "But even she has to share it, with guests frequently popping in." This setup highlights the adjustments and potential tensions amid ITV's efficiency drives.
From a drunken Highland encounter to a decades-long marriage and now navigating studio changes, Lorraine Kelly's life continues to blend personal charm with professional demands, captivating audiences both on and off screen.
