Matt Lucas Praised for Calm Response to Pro-Palestinian Activist on Tube
Matt Lucas Calmly Handles Activist Confrontation on Tube

British comedian Matt Lucas has received significant online praise for maintaining a remarkably cool and collected demeanour after being accosted by a pro-Palestinian activist while using the London Underground. The 51-year-old entertainer was followed and filmed by Thomas Abdullah Bourne, a convert to Islam who operates under the social media pseudonym 'White British Muslim'.

Underground Confrontation Captured on Camera

The incident, which has since circulated widely across digital platforms, begins with footage showing Mr Lucas wearing a black jacket, red jumper, and white cap as he rides an escalator within a tube station. Upon realising he was being recorded, the Little Britain star instinctively attempted to shield his face using his right hand.

Mr Bourne then proceeded to shout "Free Palestine. Free Palestine, Matt Lucas" directly at the celebrity comic. After reaching the top of the escalator and disembarking, Mr Lucas turned to acknowledge his pursuer, calmly inquiring: "Hi, how are you?"

Activist References Keffiyeh Scarf

In response, Mr Bourne posed the question: "You don't like what I'm wearing, do you?" This appeared to reference the keffiyeh, the traditional black-and-white checkered cotton scarf that has become a prominent symbol of Palestinian solidarity among numerous Western activists.

Rather than engaging in any form of political debate, Lucas simply replied: "No, I have no comment about it either way." The activist then pressed further, asking: "You've got a problem with Palestinians, Matt?" to which Mr Lucas responded with a straightforward "No" before attempting to gently push the camera away from his face.

Mr Bourne retorted, "Don't do that, don't grab my stuff," as Mr Lucas walked away, with the protester muttering "Zionist" towards the camera lens.

Online Reaction and Speculation About Motives

It remains unclear precisely why Mr Lucas was specifically targeted by the activist, though many online commentators have speculated it may relate to his Jewish heritage. The comedian was a signatory to the 'No Hostage Left Behind' open letter in October 2023, which celebrated the release of two American and two Israeli hostages. However, he has not been an especially vocal public figure regarding the ongoing conflict.

That particular missive also expressed gratitude to then US President Joe Biden for his "unshakable moral conviction, leadership, and support for the Jewish people" in Israel's military campaign against Hamas. Mr Lucas was raised within a Reform Jewish household, though his parents originated from Orthodox Jewish backgrounds. He has previously described himself as an "atheist" and a "fairly secular Jew."

Family History and Holocaust Connections

Several members of the comedian's maternal family fled Nazi Germany immediately prior to the Second World War. During an appearance on the BBC genealogy programme Who Do You Think You Are?, Mr Lucas was astonished to discover that a relative of his was mentioned within Anne Frank's famous diary.

The comic, who rose to prominence as George Dawes on the surreal Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer show Shooting Stars, travelled to Amsterdam to investigate his German-born Jewish ancestry further. During this exploration, Matt learned that one ancestor, Werner Goldschmidt, had lodged with the Frank family before their capture by the Nazis and indeed received a mention in the teenager's world-renowned journal.

Widespread Social Media Praise for Composure

Across various social media platforms, Mr Lucas has been widely applauded for his calm and measured response during the underground station encounter. One user commented: "How disgusting, but I think Matt Lucas handled it calmly & well. He shouldn’t have had to though. If Jewish people can’t go about their business & travel on public transport without being harassed & intimidated then we have entered a situation familiar to Nazi Germany."

Another observer remarked: "I'm no geo-political expert, but I'm really not sure that asking Matt Lucas to 'free' Palestine is going to have much effect, as I understand his trade is geared more towards the entertainment industry than magic-wand-waving Middle East diplomacy."

A third individual added: "That's not on. I hate the genocide in Gaza as much as the next person, but harassing Jewish people when they're going to a football match is pathetic." Mr Bourne's original social media post documenting the confrontation was later deleted following considerable backlash from other users online. Representatives for Mr Lucas were contacted by The Mail for comment regarding the incident.
