Melinda French Gates Breaks Silence Following Epstein Files Release
Melinda French Gates has spoken out for the first time since her former husband, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, was named among the high-profile individuals in the latest release of documents related to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. In a candid new interview, she described how the revelations brought back memories of "painful times" during her marriage.
Emotional Response to Allegations
The American Department of Justice recently released approximately three million pages from the Epstein files, with another three million pages reportedly withheld due to containing child sexual abuse material. While Bill Gates has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing by Epstein's victims, the documents contain emails alleging extramarital affairs and attempts to obtain medication for a sexually transmitted infection without Melinda's knowledge.
Speaking on NPR's Wild Card podcast, Melinda French Gates expressed "just unbelievable sadness" in response to these allegations. "Again, I'm able to take my own sadness and look at those young girls and say 'My God, how did they, how did that happen to those girls?'" she stated, referring to Epstein's victims.
Moving Forward from a Difficult Past
The philanthropist, who filed for divorce from the billionaire in 2021, explained that seeing these details resurface was personally challenging. "It brings back memories of some very, very painful times in my marriage," she admitted. However, she emphasized that she has since moved on from that period of her life.
"I have moved on from that. So whatever questions remain there of what I don't, can't even begin to know all of it. Those questions are for those people and for even my ex-husband. They need to answer to those things, not me," Melinda declared. She added that she was "so happy to be away from all the muck that was there."
Broader Societal Reckoning
Beyond her personal reflections, Melinda French Gates connected her experience to wider societal issues. "I think we're having a reckoning as a society, right?" she observed, highlighting the importance of justice for Epstein's victims, whom she referred to as "now women."
She expressed particular concern for the young women affected, noting: "No girl should ever be put in the situation that they were put in by Epstein and whatever was going on with all of the various people around him. No girl, I mean, it's just beyond heartbreaking, right? I remember being those ages those girls were. I remember my daughters being those ages, right?"
Response from Bill Gates' Representatives
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Bill Gates stated that the Microsoft co-founder had never attended any parties with Epstein and was not involved in his criminal activities. The spokesperson told the BBC: "While Mr Gates acknowledges that meeting with Epstein was a serious error in judgment, he unequivocally denies any improper conduct related to Epstein and the horrible activities in which Epstein was involved."
Bill Gates himself recently told Australian media outlet 9News: "Every minute I spent with him I regret and I apologise that I did that." The documents' release has reignited public discussion about the connections between wealthy, influential figures and the disgraced financier, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
