Michelle Obama Unveils Dramatic Ear Piercing Transformation
In a surprising personal revelation, former First Lady Michelle Obama has disclosed that she recently underwent a significant ear piercing session, adding ten new studs to her ears in a single appointment. The 62-year-old made this admission during the latest episode of her IMO podcast, where she co-hosts with Craig Robinson.
A "Constellation" of New Adornments
During the podcast recording, Michelle Obama proudly displayed what she described as a "constellation" of stud earrings now decorating both her ears. The new piercings are positioned on her upper earlobes and extend upward toward the cartilage on both sides. "I have always thought about getting some extra piercings in my ear and just never got around to it," she explained to her listeners, acknowledging a long-held desire she had finally acted upon.
The former First Lady revealed that her decision was directly inspired by the "young people" in her life, specifically referencing her daughters Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24, both of whom sport multiple piercings themselves. "But nowadays, the young people in my life are doing more piercings," she noted. "There's just more beautiful adornment."
An Impromptu Piercing Session
Michelle Obama confessed that while she had intended to get just a few new piercings, the session quickly expanded. "So, I was going in for a few and then I did my normal self and was like, 'Oh, put one there and put one [there]. Let's try one there,'" she recounted. "So, in one sitting, I got 10 piercings."
When co-host Craig Robinson winced at the thought of the potential pain, Michelle insisted the experience "wasn't bad at all. Not for me." She mentioned that her last ear piercing had occurred over two decades ago, before her daughters were born, and she had allowed a second hole to close from disuse.
Barack Obama's Delayed Notice
In a humorous aside, Michelle shared how long it took her husband, former President Barack Obama, to notice her new ear adornments. "Barack finally noticed. Took him a couple of days," she said with a laugh. According to Michelle, Barack explained his delayed observation by pointing out that she had been wearing her hair down recently. "And he was like, 'You haven't had your hair up. You've had your hair down.' And I was like, 'Hmmm, I don't know. I sleep with you every night, dude.' But he noticed yesterday," she added.
Context: Recent Comments on Appearance and Fashion
This piercing revelation comes just weeks after Michelle Obama appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast, where she criticized the media's historical fixation on her physical appearance during Barack Obama's first presidential campaign. She argued that coverage often began with "She was wearing" rather than focusing on her professional accomplishments. "It started with appearance," she explained. "And it got worse as we got better."
Michelle expressed concern that emphasizing fashion might overshadow her substantive work. "I understood that fashion and appearance for women is so powerful, that if I spent too much time talking about it, maybe nobody would hear anything else that I have to say," she confessed.
These comments drew some criticism, with detractors labeling them as hypocritical given that Michelle was promoting her fashion book, Look, released last November. The book features over 200 photographs documenting her style evolution and includes contributions from her makeup artist, hairstylists, and designers. Critics noted the irony of discussing society's obsession with women's appearances while promoting a book centered on clothing and style.
Nevertheless, Michelle Obama's latest personal update about her ten new piercings highlights her ongoing evolution and the influence of her daughters' generation on her personal choices, marking another chapter in her public and private narrative.
