Indian actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas has candidly addressed the persistent public speculation surrounding her marriage to singer Nick Jonas, revealing that the intense scrutiny over their ten-year age gap during the early years of their relationship was deeply upsetting. In a recent interview, she reflected on the challenges they faced and how they have strengthened their bond over time.
Public Scrutiny and Age Gap Criticism
Chopra Jonas, 43, acknowledged that some people seem to be waiting for their marriage to fail, particularly focusing on the age difference between her and Jonas, who is 33. She expressed frustration over the initial years of their union, where gossip and online chatter suggested their relationship was on the brink of collapse. "We're eight years in," she stated, referring to the duration of their marriage. "If people want to keep waiting for it to implode, that's their choice. I stopped thinking about it."
Navigating Intercultural Dynamics
The couple's relationship has faced additional scrutiny due to its intercultural nature, involving different countries and religions. Chopra Jonas admitted that this, combined with the age gap, made the criticism particularly hurtful. "I don't know what it was about us that rubbed people the wrong way," she said. "I think there was the intercultural nature of it – different countries, different religions, age gap. It was very hurtful. And we both, instead of looking out, just sort of looked at each other, and we were like, 'It doesn't matter.' So it's like water off a duck's back now."
Whirlwind Romance and Marriage
Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas married in December 2018 after a rapid six-month romance that began when they met in May of that year. Reflecting on their early days, Chopra Jonas admitted she was surprised by how quickly their relationship progressed. "We got married really quick, within six months of meeting," she recalled. "When I first married him, I didn't know if it was even real. This part of him. Because I was like, 'This is crazy. This is put on.'"
Building a Strong Foundation
Despite the initial doubts, Chopra Jonas praised Jonas for his sincerity, which she says has been a cornerstone of their relationship. "But Nick has this absolute sincerity. It inspires me every day in a profession which requires you to pivot and become whatever you need to put on. He's constantly sincere." The couple now shares a daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, born in January 2022, which has further solidified their bond.
Personal Growth and Relationship Dynamics
Prior to meeting Jonas, Chopra Jonas took a two-year break from dating to focus on self-discovery, as she had stopped recognizing who she was in previous relationships. She explained, "I needed to know why I kept on repeating my mistakes. And the mistake [was] always feeling like I need to be the caretaker, always feeling like it's always OK to cancel my job, my work, my meeting or my priority to prop him up." In contrast, she highlighted how Jonas supports her career, saying, "He thrives in seeing me shine; he is the most excited about the shows I'm doing."
Looking Ahead
As they continue to navigate their marriage, Chopra Jonas remains focused on her professional endeavors. She will next appear in the film The Bluff, starring alongside Karl Urban, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Safia Oakley-Green, and Vedanten Naidoo, directed by Frank E Flowers. Through it all, she emphasizes that their relationship has grown stronger despite external pressures, serving as a testament to their commitment and resilience.
