Global Stars Rally Against Gender Violence Ahead of International Women's Day
A formidable coalition of international celebrities, including Dame Emma Thompson, pop star Chappell Roan, and author Sir Stephen Fry, has united with singer Annie Lennox to demand urgent support for women's rights organisations worldwide. The campaign, launched just before International Women's Day on 8 March, highlights the stark statistic that one in three women globally will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime.
#MakeAStandfor1in3 Campaign Gains Momentum
More than sixty prominent figures from entertainment, sports, and politics have joined The Circle's funding appeal, #MakeAStandfor1in3. The global feminist organisation warns that funding for gender equality initiatives is under severe threat, jeopardising progress made over recent decades. Hollywood icons Cate Blanchett, Gillian Anderson, and Keira Knightley are among the high-profile supporters lending their voices to this critical cause.
Annie Lennox, co-founder of The Circle, delivered a powerful statement: "One in three represents the appalling ratio of women facing gender-based violence across the world. These are real people, not just numbers, and in these turbulent times we are in danger of watching the progress made move into reverse. We must not allow that to happen."
Broad Coalition of Influential Voices
The extensive list of campaign supporters spans multiple industries and generations. Spice Girl Mel B, Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker, and former football manager Sir Alex Ferguson have all endorsed the appeal. Musicians Jorja Smith and Hozier have signed the statement alongside Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston, demonstrating widespread cross-cultural support.
Reflecting on The Circle's origins, Lennox added: "The Circle started over 17 years ago when I sat round a table with a group of influential women and we decided that enough was enough. We wanted to help drive positive change for women and girls and the most powerful way to do this is ensuring we have strong, well-resourced women's rights-focused organisations in countries around the world delivering key services and tackling the anti-rights narrative at their roots."
Urgent Need for Sustained Funding
The funding drive will directly support The Circle's twelve grassroots partners operating across the globe, providing essential services to women facing violence. Former Australian prime minister Julia Gillard contextualised the campaign within broader global instability: "We are living through a period of profound global instability, and we know that such uncertainty leads to increased violence against women. The most vulnerable women and girls are always hit the hardest. In times of peril, standing together and taking meaningful action matters more than ever."
Lennox emphasised the current urgency: "Today the need for action is more urgent than ever and that is why I am making a stand this International Women's Day in support of women on the frontlines of the violence." The campaign represents one of the most significant celebrity-backed initiatives addressing gender-based violence in recent years, aiming to reverse worrying trends and protect hard-won advances in women's rights worldwide.
