Vogue Williams Discloses Discomfort with Spencer Matthews' Stage Proposal

Television personality Vogue Williams has candidly revealed her true feelings about husband Spencer Matthews' marriage proposal, admitting she "hates" the memory of how he popped the question. The Irish model and presenter shared these intimate details during a recent podcast appearance, shedding light on what she describes as an awkward and uncomfortable moment.

An Unexpected Romance Blossoms

The couple first crossed paths while filming Channel 4's winter sports competition series The Jump in 2017. At the time, Williams admits she didn't see Matthews as romantic material, confessing she "didn't fancy him" initially and believed they would simply become good friends. Despite this unpromising start, their relationship developed rapidly, with Matthews proposing just months after they began dating in January 2018.

The proposal itself took place following a performance of The Lion King at London's West End, a location choice that Williams now reveals caused her significant discomfort. "I hate meeting people after a show because I just feel like I'm really invading their space," Williams explained during her conversation with close friend Joanne McNally on the My Therapist Ghosted Me podcast.

The Awkward Lion King Engagement

Williams described the proposal scene with vivid discomfort, recalling how the exhausted cast members resembled "nearly dead" lions by the end of the performance. "They were like Mufasa by the end, and me and Spenny show up like happy as Larry getting engaged," she recounted. "I was like, 'Get me please Jesus Christ.'"

Matthews had originally wanted to propose during the actual performance, but Disney officials intervened, explaining that a live show couldn't be interrupted for personal proposals. Williams noted that while The Lion King isn't among her top five Disney favorites, it holds special significance for Matthews, making the location choice "perfect sense" from his perspective.

Her co-host Joanne McNally described the proposal venue as "such a wild choice," highlighting the inherent awkwardness of the situation. Williams compared her discomfort to feeling like "a varrucca on someone's foot" during similar post-show encounters with performers.

From Initial Disinterest to Lasting Commitment

Despite the proposal's awkwardness and her initial lack of romantic interest, the couple's relationship flourished. They married just five months after the engagement in June 2018 at Matthews' family estate in Glen Affric, Scotland. The union has since produced three children, creating a strong family foundation that contrasts with their unconventional beginning.

Williams has previously acknowledged that she likely would have overlooked Matthews on dating apps, stating during an episode of her Vogue and Amber podcast that she would have "swiped past him" based solely on appearance. She emphasized the importance of personality over initial physical attraction, noting that their real-life connection allowed them to appreciate each other's characters fully.

"You're just judging someone completely on the way they look," Williams observed about dating apps. "And I always say this, Spencer is obviously gorgeous, but he wouldn't have been my type when we met. And then we met, and we were mad about each other because we just loved each other's personalities."

The couple's journey from television colleagues to married parents demonstrates how initial impressions can be misleading and how genuine connections often develop in unexpected ways. While Williams may "hate" the memory of her theatrical proposal, the relationship it launched has clearly stood the test of time, creating a family life that appears far more comfortable than that awkward West End moment.
