The world of high fashion is in mourning following the death of the iconic Italian couturier, Valentino Garavani, at the age of 93. The founder of the eponymous luxury brand passed away in Rome on Monday 19 January 2026.

Garavani, known universally as Valentino, died peacefully at his residence in the Italian capital, surrounded by his loved ones. The sad news was confirmed by a statement posted on the official Instagram account of the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation.
Launching his brand in 1960, Valentino became a defining force in haute couture throughout the latter half of the 20th century. He was celebrated for his impeccable craftsmanship, romantic designs, and most notably, his unmistakable Valentino Red shade. His clientele was a veritable who's who of royalty, political figures, and Hollywood elite.

Final Farewell in Rome
His foundation has announced details for the public to pay their respects. Valentino Garavani will lie in state at the foundation's headquarters on Piazza Mignanelli on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 January.
The funeral service is scheduled for Friday 23 January at the historic Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs on Rome's Piazza della Repubblica.
Tributes Pour In for a National Treasure
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni led the tributes, honouring the designer on social media platform X. She described him as an "undisputed master of style and elegance and eternal symbol of Italian high fashion."
"Today Italy loses a legend," she wrote, "but his legacy will continue to inspire generations. Thank you for everything." The sentiment echoes across the fashion industry and beyond, marking the end of an era for a man who dressed the world's most glamorous women in unforgettable style.
