The Evolution of Denim: Comfort Meets Design

Denim trends are perpetually evolving, yet this season brings one unmistakable conclusion: comfort and deliberate design are now essential, not optional. High-rise waists, looser leg shapes, and thoughtful proportions are leading the charge, with barrel legs and wide silhouettes continuing to dominate fashion discussions. In fact, searches for 'barrel leg jeans' have surged by 195% since the beginning of 2026 – a clear indicator that this once-divisive shape has firmly entered the mainstream.

Putting High Street Denim to the Test

With this trend in mind, I embarked on a mission to trial some of the high street's latest denim offerings, trying on numerous jeans to assess which styles truly excel in fit, finish, and wearability. One brand that is particularly embracing these sought-after shapes this spring is Marks & Spencer. Its spring '26 denim collection encompasses over 20 styles across eight washes, featuring an inclusive size range from 6 to 24 and multiple leg lengths, including extra-short and extra-long options on select pairs. The collection offers fresh interpretations of customer favourites alongside new silhouettes designed to meet growing demand.

After a comprehensive try-on session, three M&S jeans genuinely stood out – and these are the ones I would confidently recommend adding to your spring denim rotation.

1. M&S High Waisted Crease Front Barrel Jeans

These jeans were an immediate favourite. I opted for a size 14 for a slightly roomier, more relaxed fit, and I am delighted with the decision – the shape feels contemporary without becoming overly slouchy. This updated barrel silhouette is full-length, a significant advantage, hitting perfectly at the ankle rather than cropping like some earlier versions. At 5ft 8, I am wearing the long length, but they are also available in extra short, short, and regular, offering a commendable range of fit options.

They sit high on the waist, and the crease-front detail instantly elevates them, lending a more polished feel than average denim. I selected the lighter wash for spring, but they also come in medium blue and a rich dark indigo – both of which are selling out rapidly.

Styling suggestion: Embrace the tailored aesthetic with a crisp white shirt or fine knit tucked in, complemented by loafers or ballet flats for daytime. Switch to a sleek heel and blazer, and they transition effortlessly to evening wear.

2. M&S High Waisted Wide Leg Turn Up Jeans

I genuinely did not anticipate adoring these as much as I do – but here we are. They represent a classic wide-leg style with a high waist, finished with a turn-up hem that imparts a slightly more relaxed, off-duty vibe. I am wearing a size 14 again in the long length, and the proportions work impeccably. As with the others, they are available in extra short, short, regular, and extra long, which significantly enhances fit accessibility.

I chose the medium blue wash, which feels timeless, but there is also a light blue option that almost verges on grey – ideal if you desire something distinct from your usual denim rotation.

Styling suggestion: These jeans are tailor-made for casual styling – consider a striped tee or slouchy knit, trainers or Birkenstocks, and an oversized trench coat. They also pair beautifully with a simple vest and leather jacket as the weather warms.

3. M&S High Waisted Two Tone Wide Leg Jeans

I adore a quality pair of wide-leg jeans, and these feature a two-tone twist that renders them more fashion-forward. The blend of medium and dark indigo is subtle yet remarkably effective, providing the jeans with a distinctive edge without appearing contrived.

They are cut to a relaxed fit, so I actually sized down to a 12 here. The high waist is exceptionally flattering, while the wide legs craft an effortlessly laid-back silhouette. Once again, they are available in five lengths – I selected the long – and even with flat shoes like loafers, they do not skim the floor, a rare and welcome attribute.

Styling suggestion: Allow the jeans to take centre stage and keep other elements simple – think a ribbed tank, lightweight knit, or cropped jacket. Complete the look with loafers or pointed-toe flats for daytime, or a minimal heel for evening occasions.
