Rebecca Hall turned heads at the 2026 Met Gala in New York on Monday night, flaunting her midriff in a tailored sequin jacket. The 44-year-old British actress paired the sparkly piece with a low-rise skirt, accessorized with a simple black bag, as she joined her husband, Morgan Spector, on the red carpet.
Star-Studded Arrival
Morgan Spector, 45, known for his role in The Gilded Age, looked sharp in a matching black ensemble, holding hands with his stunning wife. The couple attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Benefit, which falls on the first Monday in May each year.
Controversial Sponsorship
This year's gala is sponsored by billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez, a decision that has stirred controversy. Notably, Morgan Spector previously criticized billionaires, calling extreme wealth concentration 'contradictory to democracy.' His attendance this year has raised eyebrows, especially as stars like Meryl Streep and Zendaya reportedly skipped the event due to Bezos's involvement.
The theme of the 2026 Met Gala is 'Costume Art,' with a dress code of 'Fashion Is Art.' It calls on A-list attendees to explore how designers use the human body as a canvas. The event is co-chaired by Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, marking Williams's first time as co-chair.
Exhibition Details
The accompanying exhibition at the Met, set to run from May 10, 2026 to January 10, 2027, will pair historical and contemporary garments from the Costume Institute. It is divided into three categories: classical and nude bodies, aging and pregnant bodies, and the anatomical body. The exhibition is made possible by Bezos and Sanchez, who are lead sponsors and honorary co-chairs, along with Yves Saint Laurent.
Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, explained that fashion has 'the status of art because of, and not in spite of, its relation to the body.' The gala is a major fundraiser for the museum, providing primary funding for the Costume Institute.
Notable Absences and Changes
This year's gala also marks the first since Anna Wintour stepped down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue in June 2025 after 37 years. She remains global director for Vogue and chief content officer at Conde Nast. Despite her reduced role, Wintour's influence on the Met Gala remains significant, as she is credited with transforming it into a premier celebrity event.
Last year, many stars skipped the gala, possibly due to the theme 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' which focused on Black dandyism. This year, the host committee includes Anthony Vaccarello, Zoe Kravitz, Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Angela Bassett, Gwendoline Christie, and others.
