Showaddywaddy Guitarist Trevor Oakes Dies at 79 After Long Illness

Trevor Oakes, the founding guitarist of the iconic 1970s rock band Showaddywaddy, has died at the age of 79 following a prolonged illness. He passed away peacefully on February 18, with his former bandmate and singer Dave Bartram leading the tributes to his life and legacy.

A Musical Legacy of Revival and Success

Showaddywaddy rose to prominence in the 1970s by reviving classic songs from the 1950s and early 1960s, capturing the hearts of audiences across the UK. The band achieved remarkable commercial success, securing ten Top 10 singles during their career. Their most famous hit, Under the Moon of Love, reached Number One in the charts in 1976, cementing their place in British music history.

Despite the passage of time, Showaddywaddy continues to tour actively, though only one original member remains in the current lineup. The band's enduring appeal is a testament to their timeless sound and dedicated fanbase.

Heartfelt Tributes from a Lifelong Friend

In a moving statement, Dave Bartram expressed his deep sorrow and admiration for Oakes. He described Trevor as "a unique character and a dedicated professional", emphasising that the band would never have achieved its "dizzy heights" without his contributions. Bartram also highlighted Oakes' personal qualities, noting his role as a caring family man with a mischievous sense of humour that will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Bartram added, "I could write a book about the incredible memories we've shared over the past fifty-seven years, but most of all I thank him from the bottom of my heart for his unwavering friendship." This heartfelt message underscores the deep bond between the two musicians, forged over decades of collaboration and camaraderie.

The Evolution of Showaddywaddy

Showaddywaddy first formed in 1973 when Dave Bartram, Trevor Oakes, Al James, and Romeo Challenger joined forces with another group called The Golden Hammers. This merger occurred after they performed together at a pub in Leicester, creating the foundation for the band's future success.

Over the years, the lineup underwent several changes. During the 1980s, members Malcolm Allured, Russ Field, and Buddy Gask departed, with Ray Martinez and later Danny Willson stepping in as replacements. Al James retired in 2008, followed by Trevor Oakes in 2009 due to health issues.

Dave Bartram served as the lead singer for 38 years before retiring from performing in 2011, but he continues to manage the group. The current lineup includes Romeo Challenger, Andy Pelos, Tom Bull, Sam Holland, Billy Shannon, and David Graham, ensuring that Showaddywaddy's music lives on for new generations of fans.

Trevor Oakes' passing marks the end of an era for Showaddywaddy, but his legacy as a talented guitarist and beloved band member will endure through the band's continued performances and the memories shared by those who knew him best.
