Fans of the hit BBC police drama Line of Duty have received a thrilling update straight from the heart of AC-12. Star Martin Compston, who plays DI Steve Arnott, has confirmed he has received the first scripts for the highly anticipated seventh series.
An Exciting Update from the Cast
In a recent interview, Martin Compston shared the news that will delight the show's legion of followers. "I've just got the first three scripts, and as you'd expect, they're brilliant, proper page turners," the actor revealed. He added that the long gap since the last series has allowed creator Jed Mercurio time to fully develop the new storyline, calling the material "really, really exciting stuff."
Compston, however, remained tight-lipped on specific plot points, joking that divulging any secrets would mean "I won't be back for season seven." His excitement was also personal, as he said he is looking forward to reuniting with his co-stars Adrian Dunbar and Vicky McClure.
What We Know About the New Series
The BBC formally confirmed the return of Line of Duty in November 2025, four years after the sixth series concluded with the exposure of Ian Buckells as the corrupt 'H'. The new series will pick up the story where it left off.
The AC-12 unit has been dissolved and rebranded as the Inspectorate. When DI Steve Arnott and DS Kate Fleming, played by Vicky McClure, hit a dead end with a sensitive new case, their only recourse is to seek help from their former boss, the now-retired Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar).
A New Corrupt Officer in the Crosshairs
The central mystery of the seventh series will revolve around Detective Inspector Dominic Gough, a senior officer facing serious allegations of sexual abuse. However, early clues suggest his situation may be part of a wider, more sinister conspiracy, promising the complex, layered plotting for which the show is famous.
Creator Jed Mercurio expressed his gratitude to the show's dedicated fanbase in a statement, saying, "We're privileged to have had so many of you follow the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons, and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh."
All previous series of Line of Duty are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
