BBC's The One Show Off Air Thursday for Sports Personality 2025
The One Show cancelled for BBC Sports Personality of the Year

BBC presenter Alex Jones delivered a key scheduling update to viewers at the close of Wednesday's edition of The One Show, confirming the programme's temporary absence from the evening lineup.

Schedule Change for Sporting Showcase

As Wednesday's broadcast on December 17 drew to a close, Jones, who was hosting alongside Clara Amfo, informed the audience that The One Show would not air on Thursday, December 18. The popular magazine show, which normally occupies the 7pm slot every weeknight on BBC One, is making way for a major annual event.

"We're not on tomorrow because it's BBC Sports Personality of the Year but we're back on Friday for our last show of 2025," Jones explained. Clara Amfo added that Friday's final episode of the year would feature an interview with Gladiators star Bradley Walsh and live music from Olly Murs.

Star-Studded Sports Night Takes Priority

The vacated slot will be filled by the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 ceremony, broadcasting from 7pm to 9pm on Thursday. The prestigious sporting awards will see a host of top athletes vying for the crown.

The contenders for the 2025 title include newly-crowned F1 world champion Lando Norris, Masters golf winner Rory McIlroy, England football star Chloe Kelly, and darts sensation Luke Littler. The event will be hosted by Clare Balding, Gabby Logan, and Alex Scott.

Emotional Farewells and Final Shows

Wednesday's pre-hiatus episode of The One Show featured an emotional segment with Tess Daly. She reflected on her impending final appearance as co-host of Strictly Come Dancing this weekend, after a 21-year stint alongside Claudia Winkleman. Daly described the Strictly team as "like a family" and highlighted the joy the show brings to viewers.

The Strictly final on Saturday, December 20 will see Amber Davies, George Clarke, and Karen Carney competing for the glitterball trophy.

The One Show will return for its final broadcast of 2025 on Friday, December 19 at 7pm on BBC One, before taking its customary break over the Christmas and New Year period.
