Loyal Pit Bull Guards Owner's Body for Four Days in Himalayan Blizzard
Dog Guards Owner's Body for Four Days in Himalayan Snow

A remarkable display of canine loyalty has emerged from the frozen heights of the Himalayas, where a pit bull dog steadfastly guarded his deceased owner's body for four gruelling days amidst severe snowstorms and sub-zero temperatures.

Heartbreaking Discovery in Bharmour

The tragic incident unfolded in the Bharmour region of Himachal Pradesh, where two teenage cousins, Viksit Rana, 19, and Piyush Kumar, 14, went missing during a sudden and extreme cold snap. The pair had ventured out near the Bharmani temple during severe weather conditions, reportedly to film videos of the mountainous landscape.

When rescue workers and local villagers finally reached the location four days later on 26 January, they discovered Piyush's body buried under layers of deep snow. Standing vigil beside him was Rana's one-and-a-half-year-old pet pit bull, Sherru, who had neither moved nor eaten during the entire ordeal.

Blogger's Fatal Expedition

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar Sharma, Viksit Rana was an enthusiastic blogger who frequently shared videos and photographs of hill country adventures on social media platforms. Before heading into the high-altitude area, Rana had prepared what he believed were adequate supplies for the expedition.

"He had arranged sleeping bags, a trekking tent capable of accommodating at least two people, packaged food and other essential items," Sharma explained to media outlets. "He had taken along his pet pit bull named Sherru for company."

Unfortunately, the weather conditions deteriorated dramatically, with the snowstorm intensifying beyond expectations and temperatures plummeting to between minus nine and minus ten degrees Celsius. Rescue personnel discovered the sleeping bags, tent, and other belongings near the bodies when they finally reached the scene.

Canine Loyalty in Extreme Conditions

What rescuers found most striking was the pit bull's unwavering devotion. Sherru had remained standing near Piyush's body throughout the four-day period, enduring snowstorms and freezing temperatures without sustenance. When the recovery crew initially attempted to approach the body, the dog became aggressive, appearing to guard his fallen companion.

Only after patient coaxing did Sherru eventually step aside, allowing rescuers to proceed with their sombre task. Rana's body was subsequently located approximately one hundred metres downhill from where his cousin and loyal dog were found.

Widespread Attention and Regional Weather Crisis

Footage of the incident, showing both Sherru standing by the body in the snow and later being led away by rescuers, circulated widely on social media platforms, capturing the attention of millions. Viewers across the globe praised the dog's extraordinary loyalty and devotion under the most challenging circumstances imaginable.

Sherru has since been reunited with Rana's grieving family, providing some small comfort amidst their tragic loss. The incident highlights the profound bonds that can exist between humans and their animal companions, even in life's most desperate moments.

Broader Himalayan Weather Emergency

This heartbreaking episode occurred against a backdrop of intense winter weather affecting the entire Himalayan region. Multiple states have experienced avalanches, road closures, and extensive rescue operations due to sudden and extreme snowfall.

In the far northern territory of Kashmir, an avalanche swept through the tourist resort of Sonamarg on Tuesday, with CCTV footage capturing snow engulfing several buildings. Fortunately, authorities reported no casualties, noting that avalanche warnings had already been issued for the area following heavy snowfall.

Elsewhere in the region, rescue workers completed a demanding forty-hour operation to evacuate approximately sixty people stranded at an altitude of 10,500 feet after roads became blocked by snow accumulation.

Continuing Weather Threats

High-altitude areas in neighbouring Uttarakhand have been placed on alert following fresh snowfall that has significantly heightened avalanche risks. The Defence Geo-Informatics Research Establishment, a government research foundation, has warned of unstable snowy conditions across several districts including Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag.

These warnings have prompted precautionary school closures in some vulnerable areas. Meteorological authorities have cautioned that further snowfall could worsen conditions in coming days, particularly in high-altitude and avalanche-prone zones throughout the Himalayan region.

The tragic story of Sherru's loyalty serves as a poignant reminder of both the powerful bonds between humans and animals and the formidable, unpredictable power of nature in one of the world's most challenging environments.
