A mother was left "in tears" after her toddler discovered her father's electric hair clippers and decided to give herself an impromptu haircut, just days before her meticulously planned third birthday party.
The Unfortunate Discovery
Mum Diane Smith was "so, so, so sad" when she stepped out of the shower and noticed her two-year-old daughter, Stevie, had found the trimmer left on the bathroom sink. The toddler had used the device to shave off a significant portion of her own hair, creating a bald patch right down the centre of her scalp.
A Scene of Chaos
Diane captured the aftermath on TikTok, showing the bathroom floor littered with chunks of long blonde hair. In the footage, she then moved to Stevie's bedroom, where the little girl sat calmly playing with a plush toy, seemingly unfazed by her new hairstyle. The mum zoomed in on the shaved area, adding text that read: "POV: you have a toddler."
The Explanation
In the video's caption, Diane explained her usual routine: "If I have to rinse my body, Stevie will play with her toys in the sink and I'll shower real fast. What I didn't realise is Rob's trimmer was left on the sink." She noted that the trimmer had apparently run out of battery the previous night, so her partner couldn't get it to work, but it was still accessible to Stevie.
"When I got out of the shower I noticed hair everywhere and then saw her try and use the trimmer again and I immediately noticed and burst into tears," Diane wrote. "This was so, so, so sad."
Online Reactions
The TikTok video quickly garnered attention, with fellow users sharing their thoughts and similar experiences in the comments section:
- One person remarked: "Nooooooo. Oh my goodness I swear toddler stage is an extreme sport because why do most kids do this."
- Another commented: "Stevie isn't bothered. She probably thinks 'finally I can see all my toys.' Oi Stevie-looh."
- A third shared: "Oh no! Mine did that too. Not funny now, but you will find it hilarious one day-several months from now."
- A fourth offered practical advice: "Omg Stevie! First day as a hairdresser but good news you can comb some hair up top of her head in a pony tail so it won't show too bad."
- Another added: "Oh nooooo. Stevie Girl, your birthday party is this weekend. (It does look like with some hair gel and creative comb over, you can hide it)."
- Someone else reassured: "One day you will laugh about this! Stevie is still cute as ever!!!"
The Toddler Stage Challenges
Parenting during the toddler years is notoriously difficult, as children are developing key traits like language skills, mobility, feelings, and independence, yet they often struggle with impulse control, patience, and understanding consequences. This can lead to emotional outbursts and unpredictable behaviour, leaving parents feeling as though they need "eyes in the back of their heads" to keep up.
A Happy Ending
In follow-up videos, Diane shared that Stevie's birthday party went very well despite the hair mishap. The birthday girl sported a cute bucket hat to cleverly cover up the bald patch, allowing the celebration to proceed without a hitch. This incident serves as a reminder of the unexpected trials that come with raising young children, but also the resilience and creativity parents often muster in response.
