David Harbour, the celebrated star of Netflix's Stranger Things, was seen taking a moment for himself during a solo walk in New York City this week. The 50-year-old actor, who has recently navigated a highly publicised personal split, enjoyed a cigarette break while braving the winter chill.
A Solo Stroll and a Moment of Respite
Despite his A-list status from one of television's biggest hits, Harbour blended into the cityscape effortlessly. He was photographed on Tuesday, exhaling a plume of smoke as he crossed a street, appearing deep in thought. The actor was dressed for the cold in a dark green jacket, hoodie, hat, and trousers, with a pair of earbuds looped around his neck for easy access to music or calls.
This low-key outing follows a period of significant personal upheaval for the actor. His marriage to singer Lily Allen came to an abrupt end in October last year, sparking widespread media coverage and rumours, including allegations of infidelity. The split was seemingly chronicled in Allen's subsequent album release, West End Girl.
Confronting Mental Health to 'Live His Dreams'
The sighting comes shortly after Harbour gave a candid and impactful interview about his mental health journey. He revealed to Future of Personal Health that quitting alcohol and confronting his mental health issues were pivotal steps that enabled him to finally 'live his dreams'.
Harbour was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his twenties following a severe manic episode that led to a brief period of institutionalisation. He has since been open about living with the condition, characterised by extreme mood swings.
'I wanted folks to know that although I am living my dreams now, this is not the way it’s always been,' Harbour stated. He expressed a desire to offer hope, particularly to families dealing with a new diagnosis. 'My mental health disorder is something I live with, but it does not define me,' he asserted, adding that he now enjoys a 'tremendously fulfilling life'.
Finding Stability Through Therapy and Awareness
The actor credits intense psychotherapy with making a 'world of difference' in his treatment, noting he hasn't had a major flare-up since beginning work with a good therapist. He described the chaotic nature of his past manic episodes, where thoughts became disordered and meaningless things gained twisted significance.
Reflecting on turning 50 in an interview with Esquire Spain, Harbour spoke philosophically about his path, including the 'pain, slip ups and mistakes'. He suggested he would change nothing, as every experience contributed to his growth and empathy.
Professionally, Harbour recently concluded the global press tour for the final season of Stranger Things, where he plays the beloved Chief Jim Hopper. The series aired its last episode on December 31, closing a major chapter in his career that began with the show's premiere in 2016.
Through his openness, Harbour stands as a prominent figure advocating for mental health awareness, proving that management and support can lead to a successful and fulfilling life, even in the spotlight's glare.
