New Travel Calculator Lets You Measure Your Global Exploration
A novel travel calculator has been launched, enabling users to determine precisely how much of the world they have explored. By selecting all the countries they have visited, individuals can compute the percentage of the globe they have seen, the number of continents covered, and compare their statistics with other travellers. This interactive map tool also visually displays one's travel footprint, offering a personalised snapshot of global adventures.
Traveler Rivalries and the Psychology Behind Country Counts
According to a poll commissioned by travel insurance specialist Staysure, which tailors policies for people with health conditions, 43% of 2,000 travellers surveyed admit to comparing the number of countries they have visited with others. Motivations for discussing their 'country count' include a desire to impress with worldliness and a sense of adventure, elicit thoughts of 'that's more than me,' or be perceived as financially affluent.
Among those who mention their country count, 44% casually introduce the topic in general holiday conversations, while 38% seize opportunities to name a visited nation when others mention it. Additionally, 34% of travellers view their list of countries as a 'badge of honour,' and a fifth feel 'quietly superior' to those with fewer destinations under their belt.
Exaggerations and Annoyances in Travel Discussions
The research uncovered that one in ten travellers attempt to appear more well-travelled by including countries visited during childhood in their lists. Some even go as far as counting airport layovers or day trips as full visits. However, 40% find discussions about how well-travelled others are to be 'annoying,' highlighting a tension between sharing experiences and perceived bragging.
Dream Destinations and Travel Trends
New Zealand (24%), Japan (23%), and Australia (18%) top respondents' wish lists for future travel, followed by Iceland, Sweden, and Switzerland. Interestingly, Canada is nearly twice as popular as a future destination compared to the United States (17% versus 8%).
On average, travellers have visited seven countries by age 30, a number that nearly doubles to 15 by age 60. Yet, 56% express a wish to be better travelled. Respondents reported that their travel peaked at age 34, with 44% noting a general decrease in trips abroad as they age.
Goals and Strategies for Expanding Travel Lists
Forty percent of travellers consider it important to continually grow their list of visited countries, with many setting a goal to reach 30 individual nations. To achieve this, 56% would consider multi-destination holidays, such as cruises.
A spokesperson from Staysure commented: "Travelling abroad is exciting, and the memories made with friends and family can last forever. It's not surprising people love talking about where they've been and comparing country counts. Sharing experiences inspires others to visit new places. Wherever people choose to travel, having the right cover and financial protection in place helps them keep ticking countries off their list, making the whole experience more enjoyable and worry-free."
