Adam Thomas' Health Battle and Camp Conflicts on I'm A Celebrity South Africa
Adam Thomas, the 37-year-old actor known for roles in Waterloo Road, has candidly discussed his ongoing struggle with psoriatic arthritis while appearing on I'm A Celebrity... South Africa. Diagnosed in 2023, around the time of his Strictly Come Dancing participation, Thomas revealed the autoimmune condition causes his immune system to attack his own body, leading to severe joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.
Daily Pain and Emotional Toll
In an emotional Instagram video shared in February, Thomas documented administering his first self-injection of medication, explaining, "It is an autoimmune disease. Basically means my immune system is attacking my own body. It causes a significant amount of pain." He described how symptoms fluctuate daily, sometimes affecting specific areas like fingers or knees, other times spreading throughout his entire body.
"It's swelling, and it's exhausting," Thomas admitted, noting he often masks his discomfort with a smile. "One day you're completely fine, and then the next day you're in that much pain you can barely even get out of bed." Despite the challenges, he reassured fans after the injection, saying it wasn't as bad as anticipated.
Camp Dynamics and Viewer Reactions
Recent episodes of the ITV show, filmed last year, captured Thomas telling campmates he felt unwell while resting. This led to tension with former boxer David Haye, who called Thomas "useless" when he declined a Bushtucker Trial. Haye's continued teasing sparked accusations of bullying from viewers, who flooded social media with support for Thomas.
One fan wrote on X: "Love Adam with my whole heart and it's disgusting seeing anybody trying to tear him apart, he's my winner." Another added, "Can David please leave Adam alone? like go away!" A third simply posted, "Adam," accompanied by broken heart symbols.
Reflections and Resolutions
Following the backlash, Thomas shared a heartfelt Instagram post after receiving "kind words" from supporters. Alongside a somber photo, he wrote, "Not going to lie, this picture breaks my heart, as I know on the inside what I was dealing with and truth be told I thought it was all my fault. I now know that's not the reality."
Addressing his health struggles in camp, Thomas added, "Living with arthritis is something I don't really talk about, as much as I should do, but in there it really took its toll. My biggest fight was pretending to put on a brave face and trying to hide the pain! that can be exhausting within itself. There were days my body just didn't want to keep going, but I did."
Haye, who has since been voted out, defended his actions to hosts Ant and Dec, stating there is "no bad blood" and explaining, "I won the world heavyweight championship against a seven-foot Russian giant. So when a grown man tells me that a fun TV show - where we're being paid handsomely every single day - is the hardest thing he's ever been through, it's just not a frequency I recognise." He claimed to have apologized to Thomas and insisted he was on his best behavior.
Upcoming Episodes and Broadcast Details
In tonight's episode, viewers will witness Thomas clashing with fellow campmate Jimmy Bullard after Bullard withdraws from a challenge. This disagreement prompts a major decision among the group, impacting one person's future in the camp. I'm A Celebrity... South Africa airs weeknights at 9pm on ITV, ITVX, STV, and STV Player, continuing to showcase the dynamics of celebrity life under pressure.
