Amy Dowden Flaunts Figure Post-Mastectomy in Holiday Snaps

Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden proudly displayed her figure in a stylish swimsuit on Thursday, basking in the winter sun during an opulent holiday escape. The 35-year-old television star looked radiant in a patterned brown and blue one-piece, which she accentuated with a matching belt at the waist, as she posed for Instagram photos. This confident display comes after her courageous battle with breast cancer, including a double mastectomy last year.

A Journey of Resilience and Recovery

Amy was diagnosed with cancer in May 2023 and endured an intensive treatment regimen. This included a mastectomy, chemotherapy, fertility treatments, and a life-threatening bout of sepsis. She underwent a second surgical procedure in November of the same year, marking a significant step in her recovery journey.

In her recent holiday posts, the dancer modelled the chic swimsuit against breathtaking backdrops—a serene ocean view and an elegant infinity pool. She accessorised with a fashionable woven hat and sunglasses, shielding herself from the sun while enjoying quality time with her husband, Ben Jones, at an undisclosed luxury location.

Celebrating Love and Milestones

The couple shared affectionate moments, including a tender kiss overlooking the ocean, highlighting their strong bond. Amy captioned her photos with enthusiasm, writing, 'In my swim suit era, giving it to you from all angles. Beach club vibes today to celebrate @pollypj birthday.'

In December, Amy reflected on her health struggles with a poignant social media post, contrasting her lowest point during treatment with her current joyful state. By February 2024, she received the all-clear from cancer and has since returned to Strictly Come Dancing, where she was paired with contestant Thomas Skinner in the latest series.

From Hospital Bed to Health

Amy shared a heartbreaking image from two years ago, showing her in a hospital bed with hair loss and a canula in her hand. Alongside it, she posted a recent picture of herself looking healthy and vibrant. Her emotional caption detailed feelings of despair, fearing she would never dance again or regain her former self.

She wrote, 'EXACTLY two years apart THIS WEEKEND. When I see memories like this it makes me so very proud... The bottom picture was after I was rushed into hospital via ambulance very poorly. I didn’t know at the time but I had another blood clot on the lung but also all the side effects of 8 rounds of gruelling chemotherapy... I still remember now as I entered the ambulance I turned to Ben and my dear friend and said cancer has taken me, I’ll never be the same again, I’ll never dance again (I was at the lowest point I’d ever been)...'

Triumph Over Adversity

Despite these challenges, Amy emphasised her remarkable comeback, stating, 'My foot also broken and I couldn’t see how I could ever get the old Amy back. Pic 2 two years later exactly, after a year of two dancing tours, strictly and fabulous opportunities but most importantly three weeks after another mastectomy... It didn’t come easy, after a year of real hard work but it got me feeling like me again. I’m posting this to show it’s POSSIBLE. Yes it’s been hard but I DID IT...'

She credited her husband Ben and fellow Strictly star Carlos Gu for their unwavering support, helping her reclaim her passion for dance. Amy concluded, 'Cancer you didn’t take and will not take who I am!'

Health Updates and Advocacy

In November, Amy provided a health update two weeks after her second mastectomy, sharing a post-surgery selfie in a compression bra and checked trousers. She expressed pride in her progress, focusing on small daily improvements and celebrating minor victories.

Amy noted, 'This picture I took the day I come out of hospital, post surgery! Tomorrow marks two weeks since my surgery, and I’m feeling proud with how far I’ve come... Focusing on the little things, I’m seeing gradual improvements in my movement and being able to do more each day. I have been taking it slow, listening to my body, being kind with myself, and celebrating the small wins.'

She also urged followers to prioritise health checks, adding, 'Please remember to check yourself.'

Understanding Breast Cancer

Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers globally, affecting over two million women annually. In the UK, there are more than 55,000 new cases each year, resulting in approximately 11,500 deaths. In the US, the figures are around 266,000 new cases and 40,000 fatalities yearly.

What is breast cancer? It originates from cancerous cells in the breast ducts or lobules. Invasive breast cancer spreads to surrounding tissues, while carcinoma in situ indicates confined growth. Although more common in individuals over 50, it can occur in younger women and, rarely, in men.

Staging and grading determine the cancer's size and aggressiveness, with early detection crucial for effective treatment.

Causes and symptoms include genetic factors and risk elements, with a painless lump often being the first sign. Diagnosis involves assessments like mammograms and biopsies, followed by treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy.

Treatment success is highest when cancer is caught early, with routine screenings like mammograms improving outcomes. For further information, resources are available through organisations like Breast Cancer Now.
