'This creates constant tension through the neck, shoulders, and arms,' Mr Newsom explained. 'Over time, that tension leads to muscle fatigue and stiffness, particularly in slow-moving traffic where the body never fully relaxes.' This posture is common among those who feel anxious or stressed while driving, exacerbating physical strain.

The Gangster

The Gangster position is characterised by over-reclining in the seat, often while leaning to one side. While it might seem relaxed or stylish, this posture places uneven pressure on the spine and pelvis. 'One side of the body ends up working harder than the other, which increases strain on the lower back and hips during longer journeys,' Mr Newsom said. This imbalance can lead to asymmetrical muscle development and persistent pain, especially on extended drives.

The Racer

Inspired by racing drivers like Lewis Hamilton, The Racer position involves sitting too far back in the seat with straight arms and legs. 'This locks the joints close to their limit,' Mr Newsom noted. 'It reduces the body's natural shock absorption and increases strain on the shoulders, hips, and lower back – especially during stop-start driving.' This posture is often adopted by those seeking a sporty feel but can result in reduced comfort and increased injury risk.

The Hamster

One of the most prevalent driving habits is The Hamster, where drivers sit too close to the wheel with a hunched upper back. 'This places sustained pressure on the neck and upper spine, making it a major contributor to everyday commuter stiffness,' Mr Newsom warned. This posture is common among shorter drivers or those who feel the need to be overly close to the controls, leading to chronic neck and upper back issues.

How to Drive Like a Pro

Fortunately, correcting these harmful positions does not require a complete overhaul of driving habits. Mr Newsom emphasises that small adjustments can make a significant difference. 'If drivers remember one thing, it's this: relax,' he advised.
