Julia Bradbury Shares Candid Hospital Update Following Emotional Health Confession
Countryfile presenter Julia Bradbury has offered her followers a sincere health update just days after making a heartbreaking admission about the fears she faced during her breast cancer battle. The 55-year-old television star, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and underwent a mastectomy to remove a 6cm tumour, has been in remission since her treatment. Throughout her journey, Bradbury has maintained an open and honest dialogue about her health, and she recently posted a new video from a medical setting.
Immune-Boosting Treatment and Wellness Focus
In a video shared on Instagram, Bradbury explained her current situation while seated in a medical chair. "I’m having a little immune-boosting IV," she told her followers. "We’ve got vitamin C, we’ve got minerals, we’ve got amino acids, I think that’s it. I’m just going to chill, I’m going to let all the good stuff flow through me." An IV drip is a common method for administering medications and fluids directly into the bloodstream, and Bradbury described it as a "cheeky immune boost" for her system.
This health update arrives shortly after Bradbury emotionally confessed that she never imagined returning to demanding television work following her initial diagnosis. Reflecting on that difficult period, she revealed: "That’s when the tears started to roll down my face. After a breast cancer diagnosis and mastectomy in 2021, I didn’t think I’d ever be brave enough to leave the safety of my home and family to do something like this again. I was so weak physically, and so emotionally raw, that the idea of testing myself, of making this kind of TV show and being so far away from my partner and our children seemed impossible."
Lifestyle Transformation and Social Media Backlash
The entire experience has profoundly inspired Bradbury to adopt a healthier lifestyle overall. She admitted to becoming "immersed in wellness" over the past five years, telling My Weekly magazine: "Having cancer made me re-evaluate how I was living - and the picture wasn’t pretty. I was stressed, I ate too much sugar, and I never really honoured sleep. Now, I’ve mostly cut alcohol and completely cut sugar, I meditate, and I have early nights."
Bradbury had previously eliminated alcohol from her life after doctors warned that exceeding a specific threshold of alcoholic drinks significantly increases the risk of cancer recurrence. This warning made her feel as though "death looked me in the eyes," reinforcing her commitment to health changes.
Despite her positive intentions, Bradbury has encountered criticism on social media platforms. She addressed this pushback in an interview with The Times, stating: "I get a lot of pushback on social media about this. People go, ‘I was healthy, I go to the gym, I got cancer, and now it's metastasised, and I've got secondary cancer’. So, are you blaming me for my illness? No. All I'm saying is, this is what I went through. It was a wake-up call, and it made me look at life differently."
She elaborated on the personal benefits of her lifestyle shift: "It made me prioritise my sleep, emotional health, and gave me more time for my loved ones. If I drink more than four units of alcohol a week, my risk of recurrence goes up by 28%. But people find me giving up drinking infuriating."
Embracing Nature and Family Life
Bradbury, who has three children with her husband Gerard Cunningham, emphasised the importance of nature in her daily routine. She shared: "I walk the kids to school the long way, the tree-lined way, so they get a bit of nature in the morning. I walk my dog more than I need to, because I want to get nature snacks in two or three times a day. People who spend time outside tend to be happier and healthier. It’s not just about being rich or being able to access expensive things. One of the most important things is nature. It is free and it’s something that has been a passion of mine for my whole life."
Currently, Bradbury is fronting the television series Wonders of the Frozen South for ITV1, a project she once thought would be impossible post-diagnosis. Her journey from cancer patient to active presenter highlights her resilience and dedication to health advocacy, even amid public scrutiny.
