The Norwegian royal palace has issued a significant update regarding the health of King Harald, Europe's oldest reigning monarch, who has been hospitalised with a serious leg infection while on a private holiday in Tenerife, Spain.
Serious Condition for 89-Year-Old Monarch
King Harald, aged 89, was admitted to hospital on Tuesday suffering from both an infection and dehydration. His personal physician, Dr Bjorn Bendz, arrived at the medical facility on Wednesday to oversee his treatment and assessment.
According to the palace statement released on Wednesday, the monarch is responding well to treatment. However, Dr Bendz emphasised the gravity of the situation, stating clearly: "When people of almost 90 years old are admitted with an infection, it is serious." The physician added that more detailed information about the king's condition would be provided on Thursday.
Previous Health Challenges
This hospitalisation follows a similar health scare in 2024 when King Harald was hospitalised for an infection while on holiday in Malaysia. During that episode, he received a temporary pacemaker before being transferred back to Norway, where a permanent device was ultimately implanted.
The palace statement further explained: "It is important that we get a good overview and control of the King's health before he is discharged – even if his condition is stable now." This cautious approach reflects the medical team's concern about treating serious infections in elderly patients.
Private Holiday Interrupted
King Harald was enjoying a private holiday with Queen Sonja when he required urgent medical attention. The royal couple had travelled to the Spanish island for personal time away from their official duties.
King Harald has served as Norway's ceremonial head of state since 1991, maintaining his constitutional role despite advancing age and previous health challenges. The Norwegian monarchy remains an important symbolic institution within the country's parliamentary democracy.
