Menopause Clinic Achieves Outstanding Rating Following HRT Controversy
A private clinic established by a prominent television menopause doctor has secured the highest possible rating from the health regulator, following an inspection prompted by previous concerns about its services. Dr Louise Newson's clinic, Newson Health Ltd, located in Stratford-upon-Avon, was rated "outstanding" by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Regulatory Assessment and Positive Findings
The CQC's comprehensive assessment determined that the clinic was "committed to supporting women with care that met their needs". This favourable evaluation arrives after Dr Newson robustly defended accusations regarding the prescription of excessively high doses of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). These serious allegations originally surfaced following a BBC Panorama investigation broadcast nearly 18 months ago, which subsequently initiated the detailed CQC inspection process.
Founded in 2018 by Dr Newson and Dr Rebecca Lewis, the clinic specialises exclusively in treating menopause, perimenopause, and various other hormonal health conditions affecting women. It provides in-person appointments at its Stratford and London locations, complemented by extensive virtual consultations for patients throughout the United Kingdom and internationally.
Leadership and Patient Feedback
Greg Rielly, the CQC's deputy director of operations in the Midlands, emphasised that the service demonstrated "strong leadership backing this up, supporting staff well and demonstrating an excellent understanding of the service". He further noted that most patients reported their care and treatment had tangibly improved their quality of life, with staff treating them with consistent kindness and respect.
The assessment of the Stratford-upon-Avon clinic was conducted by the hospitals regulator in October of the previous year. While it had previously received a "good" rating during an inspection in 2019, this has now been formally upgraded to the superior "outstanding" classification.
Statistical Patient Endorsement
Based on direct feedback collected from 562 patients, the CQC found that an impressive 88 per cent were positive about their overall experience at Newson Clinic. Many women informed the regulator they had "began to enjoy life again" following treatment. Furthermore, the CQC meticulously reviewed patient data gathered by the clinic itself, which included 2,216 responses to a post-appointment survey.
This internal data revealed that 71 per cent of respondents found their consultation to be "outstanding", with 67 per cent rating their overall experience at the same exceptional level. Dr Newson, who serves as a member of the Government's Menopause Taskforce and has collaborated with celebrities like Davina McCall to raise awareness, stated the team was "incredibly proud of this recognition".
Controversial Background and Patient Concerns
However, the path to this accolade was not without significant controversy. The BBC Panorama investigation reported speaking to more than a dozen patients from Newson Health who experienced complications after treatment. Some patients developed a thickening of their womb linings, a known potential precursor to cancer.
One specific patient recounted that her menopause symptoms had worsened despite her HRT dose being three times the licensed maximum amount. Additionally, four former Newson Health doctors separately voiced substantial concerns about prescribing practices. Following the programme's airing, The British Menopause Society informed the Press Association it had removed Dr Newson from its online menopause specialist register due to concerns that aspects of her practice did not align with established medical guidance.
HRT Treatment and Clinic Response
HRT assists with debilitating symptoms of the menopause and perimenopause, such as brain fog, hot flushes, and mood swings, by replacing hormones lost during this natural transition. It can be administered as a gel, spray, tablets, or patches, with the highest licensed dose of oestrogen being 100 micrograms (mcg) per day.
In response to the CQC's outstanding rating, Dr Newson emphasised that it represents "independent confirmation of how we operate every day: clinically grounded, robustly governed, and always putting patients first". Dr Lewis added that the outcome "reflects the professionalism, expertise and dedication of the entire team, and the standards they uphold every single day". A statement issued previously to the Press Association asserted that "Newson Health is confident in the quality of care it provides".
Despite the overwhelmingly positive regulator report, the CQC did note that some patients reported negative experiences, expressing concerns about high levels of prescribed oestrogen, side effects including bleeding, and the considerable cost of appointments. The clinic's journey underscores the complex balance between innovative patient care, regulatory oversight, and public scrutiny in modern healthcare.
