From Size 28 to Size 12: How a Health Scare Inspired a 13-Stone Weight Loss Journey
When Devinia Carby received a diagnosis of high blood pressure during a routine health check-up, her thoughts immediately turned to her late mother. The 46-year-old council worker from Brent, London, realised that without decisive action, she too faced the prospect of an early death from medical complications.
At that pivotal moment, Ms Carby weighed 24 stone 12 pounds (158.1 kilograms). Standing at 5 feet 7 inches tall, her body mass index measured 54.7, placing her firmly in the morbidly obese category. "My mind went straight to my mum, who had high blood pressure and diabetes," she recalled. "She passed away in 2022 after a lifetime of illness and medical complications."
A Mother's Determination to Break the Cycle
The thought of her seven-year-old daughter, Nayla-Hope, potentially caring for her in the same way she had cared for her own mother became a powerful motivator. "I pictured my daughter caring for me the way I'd cared for my mum," Ms Carby explained. "I couldn't let that be her future. I realised it was time to take control and break the cycle."
Her weight struggles had intensified following the births of her three children: Micah, now 25, Kyle, 22, and Nayla-Hope. "I'd spent years struggling with my weight and always felt like the biggest person in the room," she admitted.
Joining Slimming World with Renewed Purpose
In March 2024, determined to make lasting changes, Ms Carby rejoined her local Slimming World group in Kensal Rise. She approached this attempt with what she describes as "a clear purpose and a completely different mindset."
Slimming World's approach differs from traditional calorie-counting methods. Instead, it focuses on "Free Foods" – including lean proteins, pasta, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables – which members can eat without weighing or measuring. The plan also incorporates measured daily allowances of "Healthy Extras" such as cereals, wholemeal bread, or dairy products, plus a small allowance for occasional treats.
Practical Strategies for Sustainable Weight Loss
Ms Carby followed the eating plan diligently and made sure to attend weekly weigh-in meetings, where she received encouragement and motivation from fellow members. She credits several practical tips from the group with helping her maintain consistency.
"Cooking from scratch every night felt impossible," she said, noting that her family previously relied on takeaways four nights a week. "Being inspired by other members of my Slimming World group, I started prepping my meals in advance. Now, each Sunday I batch cook meals for the week ahead with Nayla-Hope and freeze portions."
Another valuable strategy she adopted was "matching my meals to the weather." She explained: "On cold days, having a hot meal already planned stops me slipping off course. Sunday roasts are a family favourite – chicken, Slimming World roast potatoes, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower cheese from the Slimming World food range."
Remarkable Transformation and Health Improvements
Nearly two years later, Ms Carby has achieved a staggering weight loss of 13 stone (82.8 kilograms). She now weighs 11 stone 12 pounds (75.3 kilograms), with her BMI reduced to 26 – placing her at the top of the healthy weight range.
"Losing 13 stone hasn't just changed my life – it's transformed my heart health and given me the chance to be the strong, healthy mum I once only dreamed of," she said. "Standing here today feels like a beautiful victory. After believing for so long that losing weight was impossible, I've proved to myself that it isn't."
Her blood pressure has returned to normal levels, and she reports sleeping much better. She has gone from wearing size 28 clothing to size 12, all while eating meals that don't leave her feeling deprived.
One particularly emotional moment came when her daughter Nayla-Hope "wrapped her arms fully around me for the first time." Ms Carby recalled: "Hearing her say she could finally hug me properly brought me to tears."
The Broader Context of Heart Health and Weight Management
High blood pressure, medically known as hypertension, affects approximately one-third of adults in the UK and significantly increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and dementia. Excess weight represents a major contributing factor to hypertension, yet research indicates that even modest, steady weight loss can substantially reduce these health risks.
Dr Pauline Swift, Chair of Blood Pressure UK, emphasised: "Simple improvements in diet and lifestyle such as doing more frequent, short bursts of exercise and eating more fruit and vegetables can really help keep blood pressure down."
Dietary Transformation: Before and After
Ms Carby's dietary habits have undergone a complete transformation. Previously, she would skip breakfast, eat pasties and chips for lunch, and frequently order takeaways like Chinese food or chicken and chips for dinner, with snacks consisting of doughnuts and crisps.
Now, her typical day includes:
- Breakfast: Fat-free yogurt with fruit, a healthy extra portion of granola, and chia seeds
- Lunch: Homemade Scotch eggs or mini frittatas with salad
- Dinner: Spaghetti bolognese, Sunday roast, or Slimming World's Cauliflower Mac n Cheese
- Snacks: Boiled eggs, chicken pieces, or homemade Eton mess
Devinia Carby's inspiring success story features in the current issue of Slimming World Magazine, demonstrating how determination and practical support can lead to profound health transformations.
