The festive season brings with it a whirlwind of Christmas markets, parties, and cosy evenings in. However, skincare experts warn that weeks of indulging in rich foods and celebratory drinks often lead to an unwanted side effect: the dreaded 'festive face'.
This term is shorthand for the combination of dry skin, puffy under-eyes, and sudden acne breakouts that can emerge after periods of overindulgence. Dr Ellie Jolly, a skincare expert at The Ilkley Skin Clinic, explains the science behind this seasonal skin slump.
The Culprits Behind Your Christmas Complexion
Alcohol is a primary trigger for festive face, according to Dr Jolly. "Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it makes you urinate more often and therefore lose fluids," she said. This process dehydrates the entire body, including the skin, leaving it looking dull, less plump, and more prone to fine lines.
Dr Jolly added that alcohol can worsen conditions like rosacea, acne, and eczema by triggering inflammatory responses. It also interferes with the absorption of vitamins A, C, and E, as well as Zinc, all crucial for skin repair and collagen production. Furthermore, it disrupts sleep, the prime time for skin regeneration.
But the Christmas tipple isn't the only villain. "Rich, high-sugar foods can directly affect our skin quality," Dr Jolly cautioned. Foods high in sugar, fat, and refined carbohydrates can increase oil production, leading to clogged pores and breakouts.
Dr Jolly's Nine-Step Defence Plan
Fortunately, you don't have to choose between festive fun and good skin. Dr Jolly provides nine practical tips to limit the damage.
1. Choose Your Tipple Carefully
Clear spirits like vodka, gin, and tequila contain fewer congeners and sugar than wine, cocktails, or beer, making them a "cleaner" option. Moderation is key, as excessive drinking will inevitably lead to dehydration and puffiness.
2. Hydrate Strategically
Alternate each alcoholic drink with a full glass of water. Having a large glass before you start drinking and another before bed can dramatically reduce dehydration and help your body process alcohol more efficiently.
3. Step Up Your Skincare Routine
Apply a rich moisturiser or facial oil before drinking to create a barrier. Crucially, always remove makeup, cleanse, and apply a hydrating serum with ingredients like hyaluronic acid before bed. In the morning, use a vitamin C serum and a depuffing eye cream.
4. Limit Offending Foods
Avoid high-glycemic foods like white bread, pastries, and sugary snacks that spike insulin and promote inflammation. Heavily processed, fatty, and salty foods cause water retention and puffiness. Instead, opt for omega-3-rich fatty fish, colourful antioxidant-packed vegetables and berries, and hydrating foods like cucumber.
5. Avoid Drying Products
Do not over-exfoliate; limit it to two or three times a week. Avoid harsh, foaming cleansers that strip the skin. Choose gentle, cream-based cleansers with moisturising ingredients like glycerin.
6. Never Sleep in Makeup
Makeup blocks pores, traps pollutants, and prevents skin cell rejuvenation overnight. Sleeping in makeup regularly leads to congestion, breakouts, and dullness.
7. Prep and Recover
Use a cooling sheet mask with niacinamide to reduce inflammation and caffeine eye patches to depuff. A hydrating overnight mask boosts recovery. Most importantly, aim for a full eight hours of sleep to allow your skin to repair properly.
8. Swap to Hydrating Products
Incorporate ingredients like ceramides, fatty acids, and hyaluronic acid into your moisturisers and serums to support barrier repair during the dehydrating winter months.
9. Use Retinol Wisely
Winter is an ideal time to introduce or reintroduce retinoids, as there's less sun exposure. However, cold weather can increase sensitivity. Reduce frequency, buffer with moisturiser, and start with a gentler formula. Using SPF during the day remains non-negotiable. If irritation occurs, focus on barrier repair with ceramides and niacinamide.
