Peace lilies are a beautiful and easy-to-care-for houseplant, but many owners accidentally kill them if they forget to do a simple 10-second task each week. These elegant plants begin their growth cycle in Britain from late March through early May, as temperatures rise and days lengthen, meaning they require considerably more water than during winter. However, peace lilies are theatrical plants that tend to wilt at the merest suggestion they need watering, often causing owners to panic and give them too much.
Why Overwatering Is Common in Spring
Peace lilies are excellent for beginners, as they signal thirst by becoming floppy, but it is easy to confuse this with the plant dying. This frequently leads people to add far too much water, drenching the soil and leaving standing water without proper drainage. Overwatering can cause root rot, yellow leaves, a sour odour, and ultimately stop the peace lily from producing new flowers before dying.

Anna Shpomer from Intuitive Plants urges caution and recommends a weekly soil check. She says: "Peace lilies grow actively during spring and summer when they need more water to support growth and nutrient uptake. Water thoroughly but don't let the soil get soggy. A good rule is to water once a week or whenever the soil feels dry to the touch."
How to Perform a Soil Test
Simply push your finger into the compost to examine the top few centimetres. If it feels even slightly moist, leave the plant undisturbed for a couple more days. If dry, it is safe to water. Alternatively, use a chopstick or wooden skewer: if it comes out clean, the plant needs water; if soil clings, wait.
Proper Watering Technique
When watering, avoid pouring water onto flowers or foliage; concentrate on the soil surface. Water thoroughly until liquid flows from drainage holes. Avoid watering too hastily, as this promotes shallow roots that dry out quickly in summer. Allow several minutes for complete drainage, and never leave the pot standing in water. Proper watering takes about 10 minutes.
While checking weekly may seem tedious, it is the most effective way to maintain health and guarantee elegant white flowers this year.
