Peter Schmeichel Urges Man United to Sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland
Schmeichel: Man United Should Sign Xhaka from Sunderland

Manchester United should sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland to bolster their midfield and leadership this summer, according to club legend Peter Schmeichel. The former goalkeeper believes the 33-year-old Swiss international, who has been a standout performer for the Black Cats since joining from Bayer Leverkusen for £17 million in August, could provide the experience and authority needed at Old Trafford.

Xhaka's Impact at Sunderland

Xhaka has been one of the signings of the season, taking the captain's armband immediately and featuring in 31 Premier League matches, contributing six assists. His leadership has been pivotal in Sunderland's impressive campaign, with Schmeichel stating: 'When I look and see what Xhaka has done at Sunderland, he is the reason why they are absolutely amazing.'

United's Midfield Rebuild

With Casemiro set to leave after four years, United are in need of midfield reinforcements. Schmeichel suggests building around young talent Kobbie Mainoo while bringing in experienced heads like Xhaka. 'We are going to build a team around Kobbie. Casemiro is leaving, bring in [Adam] Wharton and [Elliot] Anderson or whatever, who are still young. What we don't have really is proper leadership,' he said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

Leadership Void

Schmeichel highlighted the lack of leaders in the current squad, noting that Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes are exceptions. 'I think Xhaka would bring a lot to the dressing room, and have power around the person which is rare. We are desperate for more leadership,' he added. The Dane emphasised the need for players who can inspire during tough matches, especially on difficult Tuesday nights.

Financial Considerations

Xhaka has two years left on his Sunderland contract and has enhanced his reputation, meaning he won't come cheap. However, United's Champions League qualification provides financial flexibility, and he would be a more affordable option than younger alternatives. Sunderland may still offer European football to retain him, as they sit four points behind seventh-placed Brentford with three games remaining.

There is a possibility that sixth place could become a Champions League spot if Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish in the top five. Watch The Good, The Bad & The Football every Monday on Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get podcasts.
