School Bus Driver Dismissed Following Terrifying Melbourne Door Incident
A school bus driver has been terminated from their position after a young boy became trapped in the automatic doors of a bus and was dragged along a road in Melbourne. The distressing incident, which occurred on March 16, has left the 12-year-old passenger traumatised and raised serious questions about vehicle safety protocols.
Boy Dragged 350 Metres Before Driver Noticed
Nathaniel, a student from Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, was on his morning journey to school when his school bag and right arm became caught in the bus's automatic doors. Chilling closed-circuit television footage reveals that the boy was dragged approximately 350 metres down the street before the driver became aware of the situation. According to his mother Grace, Nathaniel was initially too stunned to react but managed to lift his legs to prevent them from scraping against the pavement as the bus accelerated.
'As a child, you don't really realise the seriousness of it, but as a parent and as a mum, I know how dangerous it was. And you know, he could have died,' Grace stated during an emotional interview with the Today show on Monday. 'His whole body was outside the door and the bus driver didn't check his mirrors and then just took off with him on the outside.'
Investigation Leads to Driver's Dismissal
Following a thorough investigation into the alarming event, Ventura Bus Lines has confirmed that the driver involved has been sacked. The company, which operates the school bus route, has declared the vehicle roadworthy and returned it to service. However, Grace has highlighted significant safety concerns regarding the bus's door mechanisms, noting that only a single sensor exists in the middle of the door.
'The back door only has one sensor in the middle of the door, and Nathaniel was caught under the sensor, so it didn't trigger any, you know, alarms or anything,' Grace explained. 'However, the door wasn't fully closed. You know, his arm was caught in it. You would think that that would have been a safety feature of the bus to at least, you know, have another alarm for that.'
Psychological Impact and Safety Reviews
The traumatic experience has had profound psychological effects on Nathaniel, who is now receiving counselling support for anxiety and trauma-related symptoms. Grace reported that her son can no longer travel on buses independently and experiences panic attacks when he sees vehicles with similar advertisements.
A spokesperson for Ventura Bus Lines expressed deep concern over the incident, stating: 'This is a very distressing incident, and we will continue to support the passenger and family at this time. The safety of our passengers is our priority. We have emphasised our safety protocols with all drivers and will implement a review to enhance driver training programs.'
The company has committed to strengthening their driver training initiatives to prevent similar occurrences in the future, while the family continues to cope with the aftermath of this frightening ordeal.
