American man baffled by British wife's 'posh' £1.50 Viennetta dessert

An American man living in the UK has been left bewildered after his British wife described a £1.50 Viennetta ice cream cake as 'posh'. The man, who posts on social media as yankeedoodleintheuk, shared the surprising tale on Instagram, sparking a wave of nostalgic comments from Britons who grew up considering the dessert a special treat.

He explained that after preparing spaghetti bolognese, he retrieved a Viennetta from the freezer for pudding, only for his wife to ask: 'What's the special occasion?' Confused, he said: 'I went to Tesco and found this pudding. It was about £1.50. I never knew it was considered posh.'

The Viennetta, launched by Wall's in 1982, is a rectangular ice cream cake with a distinctive wavy design. Despite its modest price, many Britons associate it with celebrations. The man added: 'She said when we grew up we only had this on very special occasions. It was considered a posh pudding.'

Social media users agreed, with one commenting: 'You can't just whip out a Viennetta on a random Wednesday! Party times only!' Another noted: 'All you had to mention was "freezer" and "posh" and I guarantee every single 35+ something in the UK knew it was a Viennetta.'
