Bangladesh's Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Ali Hossain Fakir, stated on Monday that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working diligently to facilitate the transfer of the two suspects. Arrest and Detention in India
Indian authorities reported that a special police team conducted a raid in Bongaon, a city located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal state. During this operation, two Bangladesh nationals, identified as Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain, were apprehended. Following their arrest, an Indian court ordered them to be held for further questioning, as confirmed by the PTI news outlet.
Indian officials indicated that the suspects had been sheltering in the border area of Bongaon, with intentions to potentially cross back into Bangladesh. This development follows earlier statements from Bangladeshi police, who had identified the suspects but suspected they might have fled the country.
Background of the Activist
The victim, Sharif Osman Hadi, was a student leader and spokesperson for Inquilab Mancha, a youth group that advocated for cultural revolution. Hadi played a significant role in the 2024 political uprising that ultimately led to the end of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule.
On December 12, Hadi was shot in the capital city of Dhaka. He was subsequently flown to Singapore for advanced medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries on December 18. His death triggered massive protests across Bangladesh, with furious demonstrators rallying in Dhaka and even attacking the offices of the country's two leading daily newspapers.
Political Repercussions and Allegations
Hadi's supporters have pointed fingers at India and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing them of involvement in his killing. Hadi had been a vocal critic of both India and Hasina, who fled to India after the mass uprising concluded her tenure in August 2024.
