Sarah Michelle Gellar Blames Buffy Reboot Cancellation on Hulu Executive
Buffy Reboot Axed by Hulu Executive Who Never Saw Original

Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals Shocking Reason Behind Buffy Reboot Cancellation

Sarah Michelle Gellar has attributed the abrupt cancellation of the eagerly awaited Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival to a Hulu executive who openly expressed pride in never having viewed the original series. The actress, aged 48 and renowned for her portrayal of Buffy Summers across all seven seasons of the iconic show from 1997 to 2003, disclosed these startling details in a recent interview with People magazine.

Executive's Lack of Fandom Created 'Uphill Battle'

Gellar described encountering an executive on the project who was not merely indifferent to the original series but took pride in repeatedly reminding the team that he had never watched it in its entirety. "We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn't for him," Gellar stated.

She emphasized the difficulty this posed, noting, "That's very hard when you're taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not just to the world, but to me and Chloe," referring to the reboot's director, Chloe Zhao. "So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn't watch it."

Gellar questioned the feasibility of producing a revival under such circumstances, asking, "We were doing it because everybody loves it. So how do you do a show that's beloved with someone that doesn't love it?"

Sudden Cancellation Timing Adds to Disappointment

The actress received the cancellation news just before taking the stage at the SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 11 to debut Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. "Let me tell you, nobody saw this coming, including the head of Searchlight Pictures," Gellar revealed. She highlighted the poor timing, as it coincided with Zhao's attendance at the Oscars as a best director nominee for Hamnet.

"For them to call us on the Friday of what should have been Chloe's victory lap for an incredible film, and my world premiere of something that I worked very hard for is... That says something," Gellar added, underscoring the insensitivity of the decision's timing.

Pilot Filmed and New Slayer Cast

Gellar and Zhao had already completed filming a pilot for the series reboot, which was set to reintroduce the iconic Buffy character. The revival aimed to pass the torch to a new generation, featuring Ryan Kiera Armstrong, aged 16, as a fresh slayer alongside Gellar's veteran character.

"I loved the duality that we had this new, younger slayer who was where Buffy was when the show started, and then we would pick up with where Buffy was now," Gellar explained. She praised Armstrong as a "superstar" and expressed being "gutted that no one will see her as a slayer."

Emotional Fallout and Fan Reactions

Gellar shared that she and Zhao are both experiencing similar emotions of disappointment. "We don't want to let the fans down. That hurts. Saddened at how it was handled and when it was handled," she admitted. While the future of the project remains uncertain, Gellar noted she has received support from all her original Buffy castmates, including David Boreanaz, celebrating their "lasting relationship."

Addressing the show's dedicated fanbase, Gellar reassured them, "Buffy is timeless" and that the show's "legacy is still there and this doesn't diminish it." She first announced the cancellation to fans earlier in the week, expressing sadness after looking forward to returning to Buffy's "stylish yet affordable boots."

Co-Star and Director Responses

Armstrong also shared an emotional video response, thanking supporters and expressing pride in the show. "I'm really proud of the show and sad that you guys won't be able to see it, but that doesn’t take away from the amazing experience that I had," she said, nearly in tears. Armstrong expressed gratitude for Gellar, Zhao, her co-stars, and the fans, adding, "Buffy is such a big part of all of our lives. It’s not going anywhere! Who knows what the future will hold?"

The sequel series, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was first announced in February 2025. The original series, based on the 1992 film starring Kristy Swanson, became a cultural phenomenon and a huge success for the WB Network, celebrated for its witty writing and Gellar's strong, complex lead character.
