Legoland enthusiasts are being offered a unique opportunity to ride a specially-designed train as part of the theme park's 30th birthday celebrations in Windsor. South Western Railway has unveiled its Arterio train, named the LEGOLAND Locomotive, at Waterloo station, marking a festive milestone for one of the UK's most beloved family attractions.
A Colourful Commemoration
The vibrant train, adorned with a Lego-inspired design, was revealed alongside the character 'Brick Suit Girl' at the station before departing for Windsor & Eton Riverside. This station serves as the primary gateway for families travelling to the iconic Legoland Windsor Resort, making the locomotive a fitting tribute to three decades of creativity and fun.
Enhancing Family Travel
The LEGOLAND Locomotive celebrates the shared sense of excitement and imagination that both rail travel and Lego bring to generations of children and families. This initiative not only honours Legoland's anniversary but also highlights a significant achievement for SWR's £1 billion Arterio fleet, which now operates over 500 services daily across the suburban network.
Since SWR transitioned to public ownership last year, more than 30 additional Arterio trains have entered regular service. These new trains offer 50% more capacity than their predecessors, significantly improving travel experiences across London and the South West suburban network.
Executive Insights
Fiona Eastwood, CEO of Merlin Entertainments, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "The unveiling of this LEGOLAND Locomotive is the perfect way to celebrate 30 years of LEGOLAND Windsor Resort. The route connects families to Merlin destinations, from LEGOLAND at one end to our South Bank attractions like the London Eye at the other, with Thorpe Park along the way."
She added, "Thanks to South Western Railway, guests can leave their cars at home and enjoy memorable visits to multiple Merlin locations on this route and beyond."
Ramesh Ganeson, Merlin's Vice President of the Legoland Windsor Resort, remarked, "This is a fantastic addition to the 30th birthday celebrations. Families can now begin their LEGOLAND adventure earlier by boarding the eclectic LEGOLAND locomotive, experiencing a journey of play and creativity that creates lasting memories."
Railway Perspectives
James Wale of South Western Railway and Network Rail Wessex highlighted the broader impact, saying, "With over 500 services operated by our Arterio fleet each day, customers across our network are benefiting from these transformative trains. Naming one the LEGOLAND Locomotive celebrates that train travel is more than just getting from A to B—it connects people with places they love, making the journey part of the adventure."
He continued, "This partnership with Legoland marks a major milestone for a popular attraction and underscores rail's role in linking communities with great destinations across our region."
The Importance of Imaginative Play
Parenting expert and author Rachel Kelly emphasised the developmental benefits of such initiatives. She noted, "Research shows creativity is crucial for children's psychological wellbeing and health. Train journeys provide ideal opportunities for imaginative play, whether through doodling, building with LEGO, or simply watching the world go by."
Kelly explained that these activities can induce a 'flow state', similar to mindfulness, reducing stress hormones and increasing positive ones like dopamine. "Train trips offer precious, screen-free time away from distractions, allowing families to slow down and prepare for a fun-filled day out," she added.
Travel Incentives
To further encourage family excursions, South Western Railway Rewards is offering a one-third discount on one-day entry tickets to Legoland Windsor Resort for those travelling by train. This promotion aims to make visits more accessible and enjoyable, reinforcing the synergy between rail travel and leisure destinations.
As Legoland Windsor celebrates its 30th year, the LEGOLAND Locomotive stands as a symbol of innovation and community connection, promising enhanced travel experiences for families across the UK.
