CNN National Security Analyst Caught Sharing False Super Bowl Claim
CNN's chief national security analyst Jim Sciutto has been caught spreading a false claim about Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime show performance. The 55-year-old primetime anchor shared an X post from liberal activist Ed Krassenstein that incorrectly identified a young boy featured during the show.
False Identification of Child Performer
The viral post claimed the boy who received a Grammy from Bad Bunny during the performance was five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos, who was detained by ICE agents in Minneapolis last month. However, this was completely inaccurate. The child on stage was actually California-based child actor Lincoln Fox, not the detained boy.
The false rumor gained significant traction across social media platforms, with Sciutto becoming one of its most prominent promoters. Despite the anchor eventually deleting the post, it was already hit with an embarrassing Community Note correction from X's fact-checking system.
Political Context and Immigration Controversy
Conservative X account Western Lensman captured Sciutto's slip-up amid broader complaints about Bad Bunny's political views and the concert's celebration of Latin culture. Sciutto, a former political appointee of President Barack Obama, was among many viewers who jumped on the baseless theory that the child was Ramos and that the inclusion represented a subtle criticism of Trump's aggressive deportation policies.
Ramos and his father Adrian Conejo were indeed detained by federal immigration agents on January 20 in their Minneapolis driveway and sent to a Texas facility intended for families with minors. The boy has become a symbol of Trump's immigration crackdown, which Bad Bunny criticized at last week's Grammys ceremony.
Bad Bunny's Political Statements
The Puerto Rican singer told stars gathered at the Grammys: 'ICE out... we're not savage We're not animals. We're not aliens. We are humans. And we are Americans.' While his Super Bowl performance mostly steered clear of direct politics, it contained strong statements about Latinos and immigrants that appeared to fuel the false claim about the child performer.
The performance's symbolism fooled several other unverified X users before the site's community notes feature added necessary context. A tweet from Huffington Post reporter Philip Lewis was among those that helped debunk the misinformation before the official correction appeared.
No Political Intent Behind Gesture
Sources told TMZ there was no political intent behind Bad Bunny's gesture of giving a Grammy to the child during the performance. The act was simply meant to inspire children watching the show. Despite this clarification, an over-eager Sciutto - now 13 years into his CNN tenure - did not address his factual error publicly.
The Daily Mail has contacted CNN for comment regarding the incident. Many social media users pointed out that the little boy on-stage was child actor Lincoln Fox, not the detained Liam Conejo Ramos, leading Sciutto to eventually delete the misleading post.
Sciutto's Background and Expertise
Jim Sciutto has consistently criticized Trump's approach to foreign policy throughout his career. He has authored books including 'The Madman Theory' and 'World War Trump' that examine the former president's national security decisions. Each evening on his program 'The Brief with Jim Sciutto,' he offers viewers expertise on subjects ranging from national security and foreign policy to military terrorism and global affairs.
This incident highlights how even experienced journalists and analysts can fall victim to misinformation on social media platforms, particularly when content aligns with existing political narratives or concerns about important social issues like immigration policy.
