Oscar Winner James Martin Embraces Major New Netflix Role

In an exclusive interview, Academy Award-winning actor James Martin has opened up about his latest career move, starring in a cameo role for the highly anticipated Netflix series How To Get To Heaven From Belfast. The dark comedy crime thriller, created by Derry Girls writer Lisa McGee, premieres this week, marking another significant milestone for the Belfast-born star.

A Star-Studded Premiere and a Famous Jacket

At the glamorous premiere event held at Belfast's Queens Film Theatre, Martin was spotted wearing a distinctive leopard-skin jacket that holds special sentimental value. "Oh, this is the same jacket I wore to the Oscars in America—so yeah, I'd say it's pretty famous. It's very special for me!" he revealed with a beaming smile. The 33-year-old actor expressed immense pride in his hometown roots, stating, "As a proud Belfast man, I am very grateful and proud and thankful to Lisa McGee that she's given me a role in this show."

Historic Oscar Win and Birthday Celebration

James Martin's rise to international fame accelerated dramatically in 2023 when the Northern Irish short film An Irish Goodbye secured the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short. This monumental achievement occurred on Martin's 31st birthday, making him the first actor with Down's syndrome to be part of a cast that won an Oscar. The celebratory evening at LA's Dolby Theatre included a heartfelt rendition of Happy Birthday from Hollywood A-listers such as Colin Farrell and Elton John, creating an unforgettable memory for the actor.

Advocacy and Inspiring Message

Beyond his acting accomplishments, James Martin serves as an ambassador for Mencap Northern Ireland and is passionately dedicated to advocating for individuals with disabilities. He shared a powerful message with the public: "I always say to people, follow your dreams, don't let anything stop you—and never judge a book by its cover. I have Down's Syndrome, but people have other physical and mental disabilities, autism... I love to talk to people, spread awareness and fly the flag for people with disabilities." Martin continues to work as a barista at a Starbucks branch in his hometown, balancing his everyday life with his burgeoning acting career.

From Theatre to Television Stardom

Martin's journey into acting began with the Belfast-based Babosh theatre company, established approximately two decades ago to support children with learning disabilities. His early experiences there led to roles in productions like the crime drama Marcella, gradually building his reputation in the industry. Regarding his latest project, Martin teased, "She is absolutely brilliant. No spoilers, but I will say that a lot of people are going to find this show fun, funny and serious in parts, too." The series is set to stream on Netflix starting 12 February.
