King Charles has arrived in Bermuda after concluding his four-day state visit to the United States just hours earlier. The monarch touched down at L.F. Wade International Airport at dusk, stepping off the UK government's VIP Airbus A321neo plane, which had the Royal Standard and Bermuda flag flying from the cockpit window. Descending quickly, he held his left hand along the railings as he made his way onto the tarmac.
Warm Welcome from Officials
He was greeted by the Governor of Bermuda, Andrew Murdoch, with whom he chatted animatedly. The King pointed to his watch, likely referencing his jam-packed day that saw him travel from Washington DC to Virginia and back before flying to the Caribbean island. He then greeted the rest of the welcoming party, including the Premier of Bermuda, David Burt, his wife Kristin, and half a dozen other dignitaries and their spouses.
Royal Salute from the Regiment
The King received a royal salute from the Royal Bermuda Regiment (RBR), whose Colonel-in-Chief is the Duchess of Gloucester. The regiment had visited the UK last October to celebrate their 60th anniversary. Wearing white tunics, navy trousers with red stripes, and navy and red hats, they formed a guard of honour along the red carpet. The arrival was a small affair with no fanfare, as a ceremonial welcome with a guard of honour and a 21-gun salute is scheduled for the following morning at King's Square.
At the end of the red carpet, His Majesty pointed at the travelling UK media and said, “You made it!” before climbing into his waiting BMW. The convoy was more modest than the one in the US, comprising 10 cars, eight police motorbikes, and just one police car.
Traveling Alone
Charles travelled to Bermuda alone, as Queen Camilla returned to the UK after her final engagement in Virginia on Thursday afternoon. Highlights of the King’s visit include engagements with young people and conservation leaders, a celebration of Bermuda’s heritage and arts, and the opening of the new Great Bay Coast Guard Station.
