Mexican President Makes Diplomatic Push for Extra BTS Shows
The extraordinary global appeal of K-pop phenomenon BTS has now entered the realm of international diplomacy, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum taking the unprecedented step of formally requesting additional concert dates from the South Korean government.
Presidential Intervention Following Instant Sell-Out
During her regular Monday news briefing, President Sheinbaum revealed she had sent an official letter to South Korea's prime minister advocating for more BTS performances in Mexico City this May. This intervention came after the group's three scheduled concerts at the GNP Seguros Stadium sold out within minutes last week, demonstrating overwhelming demand from Mexican fans.
"We have not yet received a response, but we hope it will be positive," President Sheinbaum stated publicly, acknowledging the diplomatic nature of her request. She characterised the band's upcoming visit as fulfilling a "historic request" from Mexico's youth population, whom she described as passionate admirers of the internationally acclaimed group.
Organisational Constraints Despite Political Support
Despite the presidential endorsement and formal diplomatic outreach, concert promoter Ocesa has confirmed that adding further performance dates is currently not feasible. The logistical complexities of the group's extensive world tour schedule present significant challenges to expanding the Mexican leg beyond the already confirmed dates of 7th, 9th, and 10th May.
The 65,000-capacity GNP Seguros Stadium, recently named the world's top concert venue for 2025 by Pollstar magazine for the second consecutive year, will host the three performances. President Sheinbaum had previously praised the venue's selection during a 19th January briefing, noting that BTS's presence represents a positive cultural development for the nation.
Consumer Protection Measures Implemented
Alongside her advocacy for additional dates, President Sheinbaum and officials from Mexico's consumer protection agency outlined collaborative efforts with Ocesa and Ticketmaster Mexico to ensure ticket pricing transparency and fair purchase conditions. These measures include specific initiatives designed to combat ticket scalping and protect genuine fans from exploitative resale practices.
The president's comments regarding BTS have gained international attention, featuring prominently in several South Korean news outlets and highlighting the cultural diplomacy aspect of the situation.
Mexico's Growing Status as Global Tour Destination
This development underscores Mexico's emergence as a premier destination for major international tours. Throughout 2025 alone, the country hosted landmark performances from globally recognised artists including Lady Gaga, Shakira, Oasis, and Bad Bunny, establishing its reputation within the global entertainment industry.
BTS Returns After Extended Hiatus
The upcoming concerts mark BTS's highly anticipated return to touring following a nearly four-year musical hiatus. During this period, all seven members – RM, Jin, Jimin, V, Suga, Jung Kook, and j-hope – completed their mandatory military service requirements in South Korea.
The group will release a new album titled "ARIRANG" on 20th March before embarking on a world tour commencing in South Korea during April. This extensive tour will span over 70 dates across Asia, North and South America, Australia, and Europe, continuing through March 2027. These performances represent the group's first concerts since their 2021–22 Permission to Dance on Stage tour, generating exceptional global anticipation.
